KTM has broken from strictly motocross and enduro bikes into adventure and street bikes in a BIG way with high-horsepower V-twins. And, as always, KTMs are much more than the Big 4 bikes from Japan. A lot has changed in the last 20 or so years. KTM, BMW, Triumph, Aprilia....

Yeah, I'm very much in sticker shock after pricing the KTM 690 enduro or Husky 701. I might just stay in the Yamaha family and consider the smaller T700 to fill the hole in my soul after selling my Super T. I expect that it would be less of a maintenance queen as well. We'll see ... too freaking hot in Colorado to consider riding right now anyway.

That would be the wise choice, yes. But riding a motorcycle in the the Denver, CO area isn't too smart to begin w/ given the drivers that surround me.

I was very hesitant about driving in Houston. Avoiding high traffic streets has been my strategy.

I had to quit driving on the DC Beltway from Newington, VA up to Twinbrooks, MD because the amount of close calls I was having went from 1 every 2 weeks to a half-dozen a day. Living as a statistical programmer I knew that an increase of 60x of a chance of getting killed meant sooner or later I'd miss something and WHAM!

I've had a number of Yamahas and only one has been seriously unreliable--the 1981 650 Maxim. All the others have been usually very reliable. (1991 Venture Royale, 1981 XS-400, 2002 FZ1, and 2004 FJR)

Meh, none of the bikes that I'm interested in are in stock right now and it's a seller's market. Maybe I'll just get a Grom.

edit: just put a refundable deposit down on a Honda Monkey should they get one in stock before I change my mind.

Looks like a really nice dual-purpose! Like the super-light weight, fuel injection. If you're not too big a person it should give you plenty of oomf! Just make sure you're comfortable on the seat and in the seating position. A test ride would also be really good--if anyone still gives them!

Looks like some of the pictures are lost. Oh well. I don’t get how bad the update process is. We’ve lost a lot of gun pics too.

I've only driven a couple of V-twins, but I owned a V-4 Venture.
The first V was an older Vulcan and it was a blast. The 2nd was a 883 Sportster and, had it not broken down 3 times on a tour I might have liked it--that was 2009 and it rode like a mid-weight mid-70's bike.

I like the V-4 configuration as it's more versatile and compact than an inline 4, but can make the same power. But the Venture wasn't too stable above 75mph. Still, it was a big, comfortable ride, but I like my FJR a lot more.

This past year Ive been following the Royal Enfield bikes on the internet. The Indian based company have accomplished something that none of the British marqyes could ever figure out. Make an oil tight and reliable bike.

They also successfully sent a team on 2 of their Himalayas to the south pole and nobody died, something else the Brits could never figure.

Running good so far. Deleted the airbox, changed to aluminum fenders, changed signals to aluminum billet type and re jetted the carburetors.

I still have my guzzi but I sold the Norton 3 years ago. I got sick of taking delivery of spares from Mitch Klempf or British only. I do miss the riding experience. An RE Interceptor would be fun. But then again the Himalayan gets 70 mpg on cheap crappy gas and I could explore every dirt road in the state.

I know the KLR like the back of my hand. Got so good at changing the “doohickey” on so many friends’ KLR’s (a necessary upgrade on both Gen 1 & 2) that I discovered a way to do the entire job (on a cold bike) in under 35 min.... without needing to change the oil, proper torque settings and all!

KLRs are “good” bikes for the money, purpose built for long trips in “developing countries” without the need for larger gas tanks, etc. The previous generation did not have the ridiculous (and ugly) plastic fairings that are guaranteed to crack when you lay it down. And on a long adventure, you are simply guaranteed to lay it down. Adding more weight in the form of crash protectors to save plastic fairings is counter to the purpose of long distance travel. So the Gen 1 version is still the best.

Can’t say anything about the supposed Gen 3 with the engine changes. I’m sure they are good bikes as well. I just hate those ugly plastic fairings that crack.

not fond of the plastic either. another part to remove and replace.
i see gen1 is up thru 07.
The plastic bits on my Thruxton were the major reason I started to replace bits with aluminum. I like aluminum more than plastic. LoL. Good thing aftermarket bits exist.

Still mulling over how the fuck I'm going to get a new battery for my FZ1 to Abaco. Found the problem with why it wouldn't crank--bad starter relay, fixed the hole in the tank with steel-filled epoxy putty designed for the purpose, but couldn't get either battery to hold a charge. I think I want to get two--with the acid stored externally so one can sit until its mate dies. Hopefully, the tires won't rot out--one valve stem already did. That sea air is horrendous.
