Just scored some small pistol primers at my LGS, and noticed that they have a bunch of Federal Gold Medal Small Pistol Match Primers in the back. Anyone familiar with them?

I have a box that I bought during the pandemic, but I haven’t loaded them yet. I’ve had good luck with Federal & CCI primers completely - Winchester more spotty.

LGS seemed to think they are more consistent than “regular” primers. And they are the same price as regular primers now because I think they’ve been sitting there for a few years. Might go pick them up….

Have read that the production line of the match or bench rest primers is staffed with the more experience people. It seems there is still the human element in the manufacturing process. I have never attempted to see If I could notice any difference and doubt that even when my hands were steadier and eyes were sharper that I could.

They do tend to cost more and who doesn't like spending more?

I have in the past used standard small rifle primers (CCI 400) as magnum small pistol with good results (.357 w/W296). I believe that different brands vary considerably. SRM are probably intended to light spherical powders in things like .223, .22-250. Also read somewhere that some brands use the same primer for both small pistol magnum and standard small rifle, just packaged differently. But I don't know for certain.

I’ve subbed small magnum pistol for small pistol. You just back the charge off a bit for a starting load. I didn’t have any issues. Not sure about going rifle into a pistol load.
