Self regulation doesn't work, regardless of the industry. Personally, the AMA and their ilk should be viewed as a threat to the average patients as they are (rightfully so) representatives of the doctors, not patients.

My field is not regulated by my professional organizations who develop recommended practices, but state and load boards who develop mandatory codes.
