So someone posted this on my wall. I read it over but didn't quite grasp what it would be changing specifically. Could someone enlighten me?

Major one is background check on ALL firearm transactions. This would include private sales.

The petition is vague, but I think the issues it alludes to are:

1. A majority of states are deficient in reporting mental health-related prohibitions to NICs. (Although some, like PA, maintain their own instant check system).

2. As KV said, the private sale exemption. (Some states, including PA, require instant checks for private sales, but this is largely unenforceable).

Correction on private sales and PA.

Private sale of LONG GUNS do not require any check of any kind.

Private sale of HAND GUNS must be transferred through an FFL.

It is somewhat enforceable. If you sell a handgun and you don't do a transfer at an FFL, you can be busted for a very serious crime. Essentially gun trafficking.

Thanks, I wasn't sure about the long / hand gun distinction.

Somewhat enforceable, sure. About as enforceable as narcotics laws, by which I mean that penalties are stiff enough to keep the jails crowded, yet a huge amount of illegal of activity goes on unimpeded.
