Here's a fun exercise that I found on another forum way back when, and I thought it would be interesting to play here:
If you only had $1,000 for all guns in your collection, what would you buy? The only requirements are that all arms have to be legal, and retail price (no trying to sneak in the fact that you can buy your brother's AR-15 for $50 because he busted your XBOX360 with some pirated software or the old "Pawn Shop under the counter special" cop out). Also, you don't have to include ammo if you wish since many of us consider it to be a separate budget anyways. Duplicate arms are fine (if you want to do such a thing) and stuff like accessories and extra magazines count against the total. Milsurp encouraged of course since it's always a cheap and dirty way to get the most bang for the buck.
Last time I took part in one of these surveys, I found out about a cool rifle from Mossberg in .308 that I had no idea existed, yet was way easier on the pocketbook. It's a great way to learn what is the best "inexpensive" gun out there that is practical, and to see just how creative you lot are:P
Let's see who's got the best checkbook kung fu...
Re: Gun economics exercise: Arsenal for under $1,000
2Out of curiosity are you talking about the Maverick rifles? They are a budget line and are made ala the Mossberg Maverick shotgun route. If they are as good as the shotgun than the rifle must be a quality piece.neotrotsky wrote:Here's a fun exercise that I found on another forum way back when, and I thought it would be interesting to play here:

With $1,000 huh. Hell I wish I had that much money to spend on guns right now.
One semi-auto AK-74, $500 after mags
One Cz-82 $230
One Mossberg Maverick .308 rifle $300
I guess I would try to score a Nagant Revolver with the money I had left or just spend it on booze.

Re: Gun economics exercise: Arsenal for under $1,000
3I was speaking about the Maverick line of rifles. Got a chance to fire one a little while ago, and was VERY impressed! Shot just as good if not better than rifles costing at least twice as much. With a decent but inexpensive scope and you have a formidable rifle for not alot of cash.
Now, I suppose I should throw in my 0.02 cents:
-Hi-Point C9 9mm= $149, just about any dealer that will carry Hi-Point and not be gun snobs about it
-Hi-Point 995TS 9mm Carbine= $249 (and it uses 9x19 NATO/Luger as well!), Cabela's Sports
-NEF Pardner Protector 12 gauge Pump (Remmington 870 clone, uses all the same parts but the barrel)= $209 Dick's Sporting goods
-Mosin-Nagant 91/30 Round receiver in 7.62x54r= 79.99, J&G sales
-Nagant 1895 Revolver= $99.95, J&G sales
-Mossberg 702 Plinkster=$119, Dick's Sporting goods
Total=$905.94 Enough left over for a couple of Magazines for the 995TS and whatever cleaning kit

9The rimfire roundup:
(Prices are Bud's, but I've seen all of these on sale locally for about the same).
Heritage Arms SA revolver $157
Smith & Wesson 22A $235
Ruger 10/22 $208
Savage Mark II $181
Total $781, and plenty left over for optics, mags, tacticool accy's, or a few thousand rounds of amm. Pshaw, that was almost too easy.

Ruger GP-100: $400 (that's what I paid for mine on gun broker and I've seen it for that at local gunshops occasionally)
Ruger 10/22: $200
Yugo 24/47 8mm Mauser: $200 (Excellent condition from Samco)
Yeah that's about it. I love my CZ-75 SP-01 Phantom but I can't get one within the budget at that point.

12Got to have my .38 J-frame SW $341 http://www.snipercountrypx.com/showprod ... uctid=2067
There are less expensive .38s than SW (Taurus snub- $280) but if I had to start over I'd still pick a SW
Rock Island Armory .45 1911 $410 http://www.snipercountrypx.com/showprod ... uctid=2067
New England Firearms 12g pump $180 http://www.pistolandpawn.com/store/new- ... 67982.html
(Refurbished) Remington Airmaster 77 .177 Caliber Air Rifle w/Scope - 755 fps! http://www.amazon.com/Refurbished-Remin ... B000F31A06
Total- $999
I'd spend the last dollar on a Chinese-made cap that says, America- Love it or Leave it, so everyone would know I'm serious about stuff.

13Ruger Mk 3, approx 300 bucks
Ruger 10 22, 200 or so w/out bells and whistles
A revolver of some sort, a .357 (so that it can double as a .38)

17At this moment, there's this seller who has a Finn M28 converted to M28/30 (Civil Guard), and who is asking 1300 for it...
I would use that grand, plus I would sell 300 dollars worth of blood (I can't) to get that baby.
I think I just peed a little thinking about that rifle

18You must live in a more competitive gun market because I sure can't find a Ruger Mark III for under $300 in my area. Also when you say retail price are we talking the local gun store, Gun Broker, Some online retailers? All of these prices are going to vary. My own findings is that some guns I could save $25 to $30 bucks, but I'd lose more in shipping + transfer fees. I guess you could use MSRP but then gun makers set MSRP way too high so shops can claim that they sell less then MSRP when MSRP means jack shit.KVoimakas wrote:Hmm.

19Obviously mileage may vary. It's just a fun exercise and it's interesting to see what types of shooting everyone prioritizes when it comes down to a tight set of constraints. Nice to see the Mosin-Nagant still holds as the most popular bang for the buck!

Try this Gun Genie search. In my area there are a few places that I've never heard of before that have a slightly lower price than the ones I see all the time.

Re: Gun economics exercise: Arsenal for under $1,000
21I get a discount from Ruger and other manufacturers. The last three Mark IIIs I purchased were $203, $203, and $205. The Blackhawk is also at the new discount price. The Savage is from the local Walmart, the Mossberg from a local gunshop who's computers I fix (so I get a discount) and the Nagant was something found on J&G. Though I will admit, the last Nagant I had was $125 so that might be a bit of a stretch.MetalSlugIV wrote:You must live in a more competitive gun market because I sure can't find a Ruger Mark III for under $300 in my area.
