"Four police officers were slightly wounded and their assailant killed on Sunday after a man walked into a police precinct and “began shooting indiscriminately,” a spokeswoman for the mayor said.
The shooting came at the end of a weekend in which at least 10 people were shot in Detroit in three separate incidents. Three men were found murdered in a house on Friday night, and three people were hospitalized Sunday morning after being shot outside a strip club."

Heard this story as I was driving home and my first thought was "suicide by cop". The shooter had to know it was curtains.

Well if you look at pictures of certain parts of Detroit, it looks like pictures of war zones from around the world too. Not trying to down any people here who have actually been in or lived in war zones, but to think that an American city could ever look like Detroit without some kind of horrific natural disaster is sad to consider. It is truly a shame and a should be noted as a black mark in American industry that a city has been left to die like Detroit has.
Camden, NJ is next.

I went to Detroit for an AITP (Association of Information Technology Professionals) conference a few years ago. Best part was skipping town to Windsor, ON Canada and drinking myself stupid (I was 19 and that is the legal age in Canada). Detroit is a shit hole.

Honestly, I'd like to spend about a week there. There's a ton of history in all those (accessible) vacant spaces.
I was in Detroit for a couple weeks about 12 or so years ago doing chemical hazard surveys. Found it no more threatening than the S Bronx or Newark, the people were super friendly.

I went to middle school outside of Detroit. Not much has changed, as far as I can tell, except that there are fewer people. Even in the mid eighties there were areas of the city which were mainly abandoned no mans land and we held the title of Murder City.
I'll pass out a little investment speculation to friends here. My wife and I have a solid feeling that in the next 30 to 100 years, as sea levels continue to rise and fresh water becomes more scarce, the Great Lakes region will undergo a serious renaissance. There are established shipping lanes, manufacturing infrastructure, abundant fresh water and water front property. As the planet continues to warm I think North America may see quite a flight to that area and real estate will be of some value.
Currently there is a strong community/urban gardening movement in the Detroit area and serious plans to raze large sections of the old city to create green belts and common areas while removing blight and reducing infrastructure demands and costs. It's a novel experiment which I hope will succeed. If we weren't currently involved in other things we'd be moving there tomorrow. So little time, so much to do...
Just my off subject $.02
