Re: CLP- Cleaner, Lubricant, Protectant

I'm happy to see this thread. When I bought the Glock (my first purchase for those that haven't seen my introductory thread) the guy also sold me a can of CLP and a bottle of Butch's Bore Shine.

I like the CLP, although, was skeptical at first at the claim that the same stuff I'm using the clean the gun can be used to lubricate it as well. I was fairly shocked when I didn't walk out of the shop with a bottle of something that plainly stated "gun oil."

The Bore Shine stuff belongs in its own class of hazmat though. Kind of wondering how a cleaning agent (you know....something you have to use your hands to apply and clean with) can have a warning on it that says that if you're exposed to too much of it you can damage your liver and kidneys. Ummm, what?

Anyway, that said, to see this group's endorsement of CLP makes me happy. But, if anyone knows of anything that won't shave years off my life like the Bore Shine appears to want to do....totally open to suggestions. I'm new to all of this and the last two times I cleaned the gun I think I probably took about 10 times as long as I actually needed to as I was following along in the book. Now comes the part of learning the actual tricks of the trade.

I switched from Hoppe's to Mil-Comm a little over a year ago with positive results. The degreaser is water based and I have found it extraordinarily efficient, with the exception of very occasional copper fouling that proves resistant to anything but a copper solvent.

I started with their lubricant simply because a sample accompanied a new pistol purchase and after discovering that I preferred it over gun oil, I tried their degreaser.

Other than the very occasional use of Pro Shot's Copper Solvent, I am basically solvent free. None of Mil-Comms stuff requires a MSDS so I am confident that it won't kill me.

buy a box of gloves. nitrile are relatively easy to find but offer resistance to more chemicals than latex. and they come in fun colors like blue and purple. A box of 100 can be had for around $10 on Amazon. Be aware that these aren't quite as flexible as latex so they don't hug your hand *quite* as well and they are more prone to breaking if you are rough putting them on. No big deal, but good to know ahead of time.
