I suspect you're right. My impression is that much of the inability to compromise in Washington comes from the need to pose and strut for the cameras 24/7. The staging at the state of the union is just one more example. Sad to say but it seems Washington could use more closed room deals at this point between the legislators.

I sincerely hope the Supreme Court never lets in TV cameras for that very reason--imagine if the interpretation of court cases started focusing exclusively on the ties worn by the attorneys or which justice had the shiftiest eyes instead of forcing the public to actually read the transcripts and arguments.
