So my friend/FFL received a bunch of guns from an estate sale, complete with a 77/22 varmint .22. Like this one

The owner wants $750. It comes with an older 4x leopold scope. And according to the seller his father-in-law (the deceased) shot it eight times, said he hated bolt actions, and got a semi. What say you all?

3A .22 bolt for seven fiddy. My fifty year old Marlin bolt still makes a ragged hole at 100 and cost $70 new. I dunno, man. You can get similar accuracy for way less.

477/22 are like centerfire .22s - bolts like vault doors. Very tactile

5It's pretty, but for $750 I would expect an amazing scope.
It's your money. If you love it and can get it, the do it. Compare it to what else you could buy first, though.

6I know. I’ve been looking at tikkas and CZs too. I can’t find a .22 tikka and I’m not that excited about the CZs which is odd. I started with just looking at the Ruger American, but have fallen down the rabbit hole. My friend has a “normal” 77/22 with a synthetic stock (the one I’m looking at is like the one in the photo with the laminated stock and the “all weather” varmint barrel) that I think is very accurate - but the only real frame of reference I have is a Henry golden boy. I’ve looked around. The price is ok, but not great. I wouldn’t lose money if I hate it. Part of the complication is that it comes with the offer of a pristine (As in looks unissued eve n if it’s not with amazing wood) m48 Mauser for $350.

7If you like the esthetics, get it. You can flip it for little loss.
They are not as accurate as a CZ out of the box, but they feel more like a Big Boy Rifle.

11Well, I got it. It's a very good shooter- when my friend (an ex-cop FFL who is definitely a better shot than I am) shot it, the holes were touching at 75 yards. It's a little long to use in the woods, but not horrid. It loaded and shot all of the bullet types I had with me (some ccI, federal, and norma target ones). Of course I just got an e-mail today that one of the stores I put in a notification for finally got in some .22 Tikkas this morning. Oh well. It's certainly an interesting toy. The scope is an older Leupold 4x. I have a cabela's euro one in 3x9 I might try with it too. And the price was in keeping with the other ones I saw on gunbroker (only two but they got over what I paid). So thus far I'm good....

13Digging deep in my pocket on .22's has worked out well for me. You can get a 10/22 to do pretty much anything, but I just find classic .22's make me smile. As for expensive .22 rifles, I think it's a great idea. Does the rifle make you smile? THAT's the important part.
