Gun show: Cool hardware + Vile T-shirts and ignorance

I saw a particularly vile T-shirt for sale at last weekend's Market Hall Gun Show here in Dallas: A sepia tone photoshop image of a teenaged Barack Obama seated - Adolph Hitler stands behind him with his arms lovingly draped on Obama's shoulders. That's the kind of crap that makes gun shows a mixed experience for me. I enjoy looking at firearms, maybe finding something interesting, but the hatred and ignorance concentrated in these venues is almost too much to take sometimes. I walked by the NRA membership booth where the guy was lecturing someone about how "Hillary, Obama and the U.N. are working together to overturn the 2nd Amendment blah, blah, blah..." I had to walk away quickly - just hearing that drivel gave me a headache. And those assholes from the Texas Border Volunteers had a booth where they were signing up recruits. Glossy 8 x 10 color photos on display of captured frightened looking "illegals" squatting, hands in the air. What caught my eye was the fact that the people in the photos were all asian - very likely from mainland China. Above the photos a big ominous sign: "AMNESTY IS COMING SOON". Playing on fears of a "yellow peril". Nice.
I might get this old cartoon put on a Tshirt just for gun shows:

Yes, Market Hall is the classiest of the Dallas venues.
We should go as a Re-educating Unit to the next one.

In regards to the rhetoric, was it really surprising or was it more over the top than usual?Out here, it's the usual lily-white teabaggers/don't tread on me BS.

What is 'surprising' is probably regionally specific
Do you guys have a lot of confederate battle flags at yours? If not, that might be surprising, its fairly common here. I get what you are saying.... not trying to be a jerk but I am going to be there are some things that people in TX are fairly unphased by that you would probably find more over the top than usual.

Oh, we get all that...confederate flags, Barack
HUSSEIN Obama birther shirts, pictures of Hitler-Stalin-BO...all that stuff. But the yellow peril stuff did make me rock back on my heels.
I mean it when I describe Maine as the "Deep South of the North". You should read about our new governor
What's funny up here, I have yet to see "The Border Militia" walking the border moaning about illegal Canucks, but, there has been talk about it. FWIW, there is a ton of scrutiny applied to most Canadian workers/businesses/firms.

LOL, I'm not the guy who walks into a cheese store and complains about that "cheesy smell".
That crap is present at almost every gun show in various degrees, so I fully expect to see it. A gun show can't be a neutral environment like, say a boat show or home improvement show. This being the biggest one in Dallas, there was just more of it to cause annoyance/anger/disgust on my part.

Yeah they got Confederate flags at the gun shows in Ohio to honor our Southern heritage. Right next to 'em, they got high cap mags with a sign that says "buy before the next BAN takes effect ZOMG!" My theory is, they have to get the crowd hopped up on paranoia and well out of their minds, so they'll lay down $650 for a CAI rebuilt Romanian WASR. Kind of like a strip club for right wing nuts.

I don't know what its like in Maine but on friday night in Duluth the city is swarming with Canucks that come down like a swarm of locust from Thunderbay for their weekend shopping trip to Sams Club, all you hear on the street is "fuck all the smokes and Labats are cheap eh" gotta tighten up the border.

We have the low cut assistants that can't answer questions but certainty draw the crowds to their tables with their brights on.

It seems to be more of a function of the exchange rate. We'll get droves for shopping, but lately the Canadian dollar has been close to par with the dollar. Currently it's only $1 Can to $1.009 US. Up on the border there's a lot of cross border shopping for both sides.
I remember crossing the Canadian border and was asked by the border guard, "Is there anything you plan to leave in Canada besides your money?"

The last time I went to Dallas Market Hall, I wore my Obama shirt.
Strangely, got no real flak beyond some stares. One gal in particular, working the "Survival MREs" table, gave me the stink eye the entire time that I was within line of sight. But I was able to sell a pistol and buy a shotgun with no problems at all.

My girl says I'm not allowed to wear it because I'm not Asian (I'm mexican), but she'd sport that on a T-shirt.

The confederate battle flag is pretty ubiquitous at Dallas gun shows. At the flag vendor, the Tshirt vendor, bumper stickers, etc. To the point that I barely give them a second glance. The big nazi swastika flags unfurled above the WWII German memorabilia guy's table - that I find borderline offensive, but apparently that's cool in these parts as well. Wonder if that would fly in regions with a larger Jewish population?
Speaking of the battle flag... I remember a few years ago a pair of young black men started their own clothing line called NuSouth and developed an intriguing logo:
It caused a bit of a stir, especially amongst some southern whites who considered it a form of flag desecration.
I think the company may have gone out of business, unfortunately.

Yeah, the came out of Charleston, I think.
I thought it was a great idea but, like you said, many were none too happy. Which is a shame.

It's unfortunate that these groups that show up at these shows and help associate hate with guns.
