Gun Appraisal

Hello

After my dad passed, my mom gave me his S&W 357 mag revolver that he had bought around 1980. I've taken it to the range lately. It's a beautiful pistol, in excellent shape and rarely fired, but it basically just sits in the closet. I will soon be taking a CCW class and I'm looking for a quality conceal weapon. A guy I work with has a .40 S&W Shield. We discussed a trade, but I'd like to know what it's worth. I'm reluctant to give it up for sentimental reasons, but I figured my dad would want me to get some use out of it. The guy with the Shield said his is about a year old and he paid about 450. He'd throw in three magazines with it. Thank you in advance.

i'm a semiauto guy but i agree with these folks. it's family, keep it. there will never be another "dad's old gun". get a shield if you insist, revisit the question after you've shot both for a while.
i'm retired. what's your excuse?

I’m not a revolver guy, but even I know that a S&W .357 revolver in excellent condition is worth at least 2 shields. Keep the revolver and rent a shield to try out. I don’t particularly like the pistol, and the reason it still sells is because it’s 2/3 the price of a P365 or Hellcat.
Glad that federal government is boring again.

I paid $299 for my 9mm Shield.

The 40 S&W version is worth less than that. Used? Maybe it's worth $200 pre-panic.

The revolver is worth far more than that. Never willingly part with a S&W revolver that was passed down from a relative. If you do part with it, check the real selling price first.

Thanks for all the replies. I decided to keep it. I most likely would have anyways. And, no, I won't leave my wife alone with this guy. Haha.

He's a good guy, though. I'm a beginner with firearms. Bought a Springfield XD 45 in November and trying to learn as much as I can. He has been very helpful. I know he would have offered me money in addition to the shield. But no matter. I'm keeping my dad's revolver!

Stiff: you mentioned a P365 and Hellcat. Are those high quality and good for carry?

By the way: model is a 65-3 (I think it's a 3. Might be a 8 or 9, but google didn't bring either of those up). 4 inch barrel.

In general, modern semi-autos in current production will always be cheap and plentiful to acquire. Your father’s old SW revolver has more than sentimental value, it has collectibility value. It cannot be easily replaced because they SW don’t make them that way anymore in this century, if they make them at all.

Good move. The 65 is the stainless version on the 19 IIRC and the 19 is still about my favorite modern S&W revolver.
To be vintage it must be older than me!
The next gun I buy will be the next to last gun I ever buy. PROMISE!

Your old 65-3 is likely worth four used Shields...

I am sure you can gain a lot of interest if you ever decided to sell that one. Those are really nice revolvers.

The P365 and the Hellcat are probably the most popular carry pistols today. SIG literally sold a million of them in 18 months. They are popular because they’re imperceptibly larger than a Shield, yet they carry 3-4 more rounds of 9mm. I have the P365, and it’s one pistol I carry the most. It’s unbelievably small for something with 10+1 capacity.

Yeah, the only way to get them in CA is by buying from people who recently moved from out of state, so you’re gonna pay a premium for that.
