140 Republicans to join Trump’s effort to overturn the election on January 6th

1
Donald Trump has demanded that Vice President Mike Pence and congressional Republicans overturn the results of the 2020 election so that the GOP will continue to control the White House despite President-elect Joe Biden winning.

As part of his effort, Trump has repeatedly lied about the results.

As part of the effort, Trump has urged his supporters to descend upon the nation's capitol on January 6th.

On Thursday, CNN's Jake Tapper cited two House Republicans telling him that over 140 GOP members of Congress will back Trump's effort to overturn the election.

"2 House Republicans tell me they expect as of now that at least 140 Republican Members of the House will on Jan 6 object to and vote against the Electoral College results showing President-elect Biden won," Tapper reported.

They will keep this up until the they are sanctioned for their outrageous and seditious words/actions.

Words matter. We’re gonna find out the guy who blew himself up in the RV was a Republican.

Trump would have to get Congress to overturn 38 Electoral votes to get to 270 and win or 37 Electoral votes and throw it into the House- never going to happen. The process, part of the Electoral Count Act of 1877 has only been invoked twice - in 1969 and in 2004 and both by Democrats. The "140" are just putting on a show for Donnie and his base, break a leg.

§2384. Seditious conspiracy
If two or more persons in any State or Territory, or in any place subject to the jurisdiction of the United States, conspire to overthrow, put down, or to destroy by force the Government of the United States, or to levy war against them, or to oppose by force the authority thereof, or by force to prevent, hinder, or delay the execution of any law of the United States, or by force to seize, take, or possess any property of the United States contrary to the authority thereof, they shall each be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than twenty years, or both.

This would seem to be pretty clear. I suppose the questions is: Can elected officials of the US commit sedition while standing in the senate or house chamber pretending to do their jobs of protecting the constitution and peoples of the US. I heard on GOP say he was protecting the votes of 74 million voters. He was saying that to protect the minority voters, he wanted the majority to be thrown out. I have a fence rail and a few gallons of driveway sealer. Somebody have some feathers.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell called the upcoming electoral vote certification "the most consequential vote" on a call with senators this week, according to Senator Mitt Romney, who was on the call. Congress will convene on January 6 to count each state's electoral votes and reaffirm President-elect Joe Biden's victory.

The tally offers Republican lawmakers who have yet to acknowledge President-elect Joe Biden's victory one last-ditch attempt to overturn the results of the presidential election. Republican Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri announced Wednesday he intends to object to the certification.

Asked his interpretation of McConnell's comments, Romney told reporters Friday: "I see that as a statement that he believes it's a — it's a referendum on our democracy."
McConnell asked Republican senators last month not to object when the joint session convenes. Other GOP senators, including those close to Mr. Trump, have suggested such a move would be fruitless.

Although Hawley's effort is unlikely to succeed, Romney called it "dangerous for democracy here and abroad," as it "continues to spread the false rumor that somehow the election was stolen."

"Look, I lost in 2012, I know what it's like to lose," said Romney, who ran for president in 2012. "And there were people that said there are irregularities. I have people today who say 'hey you know what you really won' — but I didn't, I lost fair and square. Of course there were irregularities there always are, but spreading this kind of rumor about our election system not working is dangerous for democracy here and abroad."

It's the right of Republicans to object under the Electoral Count Act of 1877, Democrats did it in 1969 and in 2004. The House even with it's smaller majority is not going to overturn a states electoral votes and it's highly unlikely that the Senate will do it. These Republicans are just feeding Trump and his base. Trump's message reached a lot of voters and Republican politicians like Hawley, Graham, Rubio, Cruz...salivate at the thought that they can attract those voters to their campaigns. It's all political drama to flatter Trump and attract his base voters.

Cruz Joins GOP Senate Block That Will Challenge Biden’s Victory

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -U.S. Senator Ted Cruz on Saturday said he will be among a dozen Republican senators who will challenge President-elect Joe Biden’s victory when Electoral College results are tallied in Congress next week – a largely symbolic move that has little chance of preventing Biden from taking office.

The Republicans join Senator Josh Hawley, who earlier this week became the first sitting member of the Senate to announce he would challenge the election result. A number of Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives also plan on contesting the vote tally.

In a statement, Cruz and the other senators said they intend to vote to reject electors from swing states that have been at the center of President Donald Trump’s unproven assertions of election fraud and will call for the establishment of a commission to investigate claims of fraud on an emergency basis.

Cruz was joined in the statement by Senators Ron Johnson, James Lankford, Steve Daines, John Kennedy, Marsha Blackburn, Mike Braun, along with Cynthia Lummis, Tommy Tuberville, Bill Hagerty, and Roger Marshall, all of whom will be sworn in as senators on Sunday in the new Congress.

Biden will be sworn into office on Jan. 20.

10 Senators (including four incoming), and counting, have joined Hawley and Cruz. Sens. Ron Johnson (Wis.), James Lankford (Okla.), Steve Daines (Mont.), John Neely Kennedy (La.), Marsha Blackburn (Tenn.) and Mike Braun (Ind.) — along with Sens.-elect Cynthia M. Lummis (Wyo.), Roger Marshall (Kan.), Bill Hagerty (Tenn.) and Tommy Tuberville (Ala.)

My "Spidey Sense" puts several pieces together:
1) 140 ReThug Representatives.
2) 12 (and counting) ReThug Senators
3) Proud Punks and other groups are coming to DC to "protest" and, as we've seen, they are NOT non-violent
4) Watches have found they are looking to smuggle arms into the District, in violation of DC law.
5) Clearly they are planning violence.
6) Trump cut his Mar-a-Lago vacation off to return early and didn't even appear for New Years. Videoed getting off Marine 1 he looked like distracted, angry, and like 100 miles of bad road.
7) Crackpots around Trump have posited more and more outlandish theories of how and why the election was "stolen" from Trump.
8) Flynn and others have pushed Trump to declare Martial Law.

With significant support in the Senate and House, and violence in the streets, of DC (fomented by his thugs), it's looking like Trump really IS looking to launch his coup d'état by declaring Martial Law on this worst possible excuse.

When one party believes a)government doesn't work, and b) the other party cannot be legitimately elected to control the government, and that if it IS elected, it is BY DEFINITION, fraudulent, Democracy is through, even if that other party wins and believes in government. East Texas congressman Louie Gohmert suggested that “violence in the streets” may be the only remaining option to block Joe Biden from becoming president, after a federal judge rejected his lawsuit aiming to force Vice President Mike Pence to overturn the election.
Late Friday on Newsmax, Gohmert said he had sought redress in court “so that you didn’t have to have riots and violence in the street.”

“Bottom line is, the court is saying, ‘We’re not going to touch this, you have no remedy,’” Gohmert said. “Basically, in effect, the ruling would be that you’ve got to go to the streets and be as violent as antifa and BLM.” It’s not the first time Gohmert — a former state trial court judge who just won his ninth term in Congress — has expressed admiration for the use of violence to overturn an election.
Gohmert and his fellow plaintiffs wanted the court to let Pence toss out Biden’s victories in a handful of states, nullifying tens of millions of ballots and replacing the will of the electorate with their own desire to give Trump a second term.
GOP House members say that 140 or more of their colleagues will object, though with Democrats firmly in the majority, they have no chance of overturning Trump’s defeat.

Congress will be required to debate and vote on the results if at least one senator also objects. Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley plans to do so. Sen.-elect Tommy Tuberville of Alabama, who will be sworn in on Sunday, may also defy Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

Even in the Senate, such objections are doomed with McConnell and the rest of the GOP leadership staunchly opposed to the maneuver.

Mike Pence green-lights GOP scheme to block the election results -- says he 'welcomes the efforts'

Vice President Mike Pence on Saturday said he "welcomes the efforts" by some Republicans to ignore the results of the 2020 election, which was won by President-elect Joe Biden.

On Saturday, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) said he would be joined by ten other GOP senators who will be objecting to the results in a joint-session of Congress.

The scheme has fractured the Republican caucus and is even opposed by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY).

CNN's Jim Acosta on Saturday tweeted a statement by Pence chief of staff Marc Short.

"Vice President Pence shares the concerns of millions of Americans about voter fraud and irregularities in the last election," Pence said, even though there has been no evidence of fraud that would alter the outcome.

"The Vice President welcomes the efforts of members of the House and Senate to use the authority they have under the law to raise objections and bring forward evidence before the Congress and the American people on January 6th," Pence argued.

Republicans fear Trump's loyalty tests will haunt the GOP in Georgia's Senate runoffs on Tuesday and in the 2022 midterm elections.

Pence’s actions should be put in terms he will understand.

It should haunt them and cause them to be cast out into the political wilderness for the iniquity of their leaders and the damage they desired unto the Constitution their children and the children's children, to the third and the fourth generation shall wander.

Their goal is not to succeed but instead to delay and stir up the followers into a frenzy by getting shutdown again and again and again. It is to foster the fantasy that they have tried to right a wrong lawfully only to have the commies and fascists deny them their rights or any justice. The can challenge every vote that they desire and in each case the counting stops and the House and Senate must take a vote on that one issue.

IIRC there are likely 25 States they will challenge. Each attempt halts the proceedings and requires the two houses to adjourn for debate and then a vote. Each loss simply supports their justification that violence is the only answer.

Will it work? I do not believe it's likely but must admit that the outcome really is far from certain. Remember the goal of terrorism is two fold, to sow fear but also to create an over reaction to what is actually happening.

Take a breath.

There won't be a revolution, for many reasons. The main one is a population that is split right down the middle, and the second reason is the Bradley Fighting Vehicle and other instruments of raw force.

There might be demonstrations, but in the last few elections, there are always demonstrations. Demonstrations are American.

Learn arithmetic. A challenge to the certification doesn't make it past the House. Challenging the certification is within the rights of every senator and representative. I wouldn't have it any other way.

I hope you're right. I fear you're wrong. I expect they are planning violence and, likely, to disguise themselves as BLM and antifa to give Trump an excuse for martial law.

The math is simple. They cannot win on Jan 6. But I think Dems should challenge the vote in Texas, Florida, Iowa, Alabama (How could a clod like Tubs beat stolid Jones? Northwestern beat Auburn--Heh,heh!), Mississippi, Kentucky (I thought Mitch was HATED there), Montana, and North Carolina. If Warnock and Ossoff are elected, that puts the Senate at 50/50...just one Republican, like Romney or Sasse, pissed at Trump and Hawley, could invalidate several of Trump's EV states--and toss out a bunch of Senators, too!

Republicans have been fighting dirty since they blocked LBJ's SCOTUS nominations in 1968. Half a century of "Playing nice" with an opponent who doesn't is just plain STUPID! Give them a taste of their own medicine!

I cannot count how many times I was told "they can't do that" and they did it anyway. It started with the Emoluments clause. Concentration camps. Abandoning the Kurds. Refusing to hear witnesses and prejudging impeachment. Trashing our allies. Blackmailing allies (Ukraine). Befriending our adversaries. Spreading Russian propaganda in the House, Senate, and White House. Leaving the World Health Organization. Allowing C19 to spread on purpose (once they realized it mostly killed the poor and minorities).

Hell, does anyone remember the July 4th that the GOP Senators spent in Moscow? Too many things that no one saw coming....

Finally, if the GA senators, by some miracle, flip the Senate, watch Joe Manchin of West Virginia flip to the GOP after receiving millions for reelection from Moscow Mitch. That would keep Mitch in charge.

There will be no happy ending to this story no matter what.
