I seriously don't understand this severe aversion to being on Facebook. Besides, they can only "steal" as much "privacy" as you put out there.

"If it's free, you are the product."

That marijuana connection is pretty weak.

I like polls, but generally just follow them around a presidential election cycle. Gallup has been around a long time though it has a slight conservative tilt, but they are reliable. Other polls also show that more people favor less restrictive gun laws and that handguns shouldn't be just for law enforcement. Independents are still on the rise - 38% Indep / 31% Demo /29% Rep. They do come in different shades, Demo leaning, Repub leaning, issue etc., but 56% are moderate and liberal. Pew Research used a large sample a few years ago that showed party affiliation was set by age 20.

I love computers, but I'm just not into the social networking sites yet. Plus we've had problems in my agency with some staff (not mine) networking on them and stirring up personnel problems.

The LGC Facebook page looks great Mark!

Glad you like the FB page, thank Inquisitor and spikerogan.

I have an aversion to FB not because I am afraid of it, but because I see no purpose in it. My wife is on it and has a constant barage of friend requests from people who she hasn't spoken to in 20 years. She can't say no for fear of being thought rude so she has hundreds of 'friends' who all get to be voyeurs, peer into our lives, look at pictures of our kids and who she will never ever speak to outside of saying 'yes' to the friend request. I think its odd. And there is no way to hide from people once you are on it. Which is was mason's point was - he was found by some crazy ex girlfriend.

And why would I ever sign up for FB? To peer into the lives of others from afar. Its a very bizarre thing. But......... I am not the majority, quite obviously.

So...... while I am not interested in being on FB, I think its obvious that we need the presence. And spike is doing a great job. People are engaging and commenting there that would never being participating here.

I use facebook for people I talk to and to organize our D&D group. It's quite simple to ignore people you don't want to talk to. You click ignore. I regularly do a "friend trimming" where I go through my list and see who I really don't talk to and then delete them from my friends list. My list tops out at 60 something. Most people have a few hundred "friends". I use it to stay in touch with people I give a shit about. I guess that list isn't very big.

Well, I know FB is very critical in my work, since networking in the arts is the key to it all. I can honestly say that without Facebook I wouldn't have a quarter of the gigs that I got over the past 5 years. It's a huge source of work and communication for me, and it's a great promotional tool.

It's the tools who don't know how to manage their personal lives that end up "suffering" on social network sites. In order to get the most out of social networking, you first need to know how to function socially and have a need to network. Otherwise, you really don't have a need to be on one.

That's just my take on it.

It's the Tools that make up most of Facebook. It's Tools Facebook is taking advantage of. It's ToolLand, with happy Tools connected to each other sending those important Farmville updates, finding wonderful detail in each others lives, happily informing each other they had a cheese sandwich for lunch. It's Facebook exposing data without telling the Tools they are doing so to make those connections, and without a doubt there will be consequences to this but Facebook is counting on deep pockets and smart lawyers to keep them out of trouble.

That's why.

There's a guy I work with who constantly posts pics of meals, gives status updates on his errands, etc. it gets tiresome. FB also hogs my computers resources to the put point of locking it up regularly. It has been nice to get back in touch with friends I hadn't seen in over a decade, and likely wouldn't have ever again without it, but overall I just find FB to be an annoyance.

I get my gigs the old fashioned way, through phone calls and email, but mostly calls. For the most part I can communicate much faster, clearer, and more efficiently by voice. Hell, I come off as a dolt through written communication on here plenty, I don't need to do that with the whole world in CC-including my bosses. :cap: Now cell phones, that was a real game changer for me. I don't know how I ever managed to get shows before that considering that I would regularly be away from home for weeks or months at a time while working all over the state and SE.

There are definitely many good reasons that the LGC should have a presence on FB, but that doesn't mean that I need to be the unless I have to. The LGC is in my friends or likes, or whatever I think though. My FB page has the bare minimum info attached to it. If someone wants to have real conversation with me but doesn't have my number, they can send me a message and get it. :ras:

Your analogy is dead nuts accurate for me, kind of like my shooting.
I tryied face book. Too many friend requests. Just pressure. Also, your employer can see what your fucked up friends write to you. Scary! Also those fucking stupid games. Farmville? What the fuck are these people thinking. Can't find anything better to do or what?? My the world has changed...

It's true that FB is kinda weird, but reconnecting with people that you once were close to is great. My buddy from cub scouts is a fireman now, and he spent a great deal of time and energy in Haiti helping folks who really needed him. I liked reading about his experiences there. You just need to learn how to filter out the trash. Plus, seeing myself in the 2nd grade class photos he posted was hilarious!
