Well, while the FBI is busy doing, um, NOTHING to prevent Right wing extremist violence, they at least they are defending us from hippie protestors and soccer moms.

Some of you older guys might remember shit like this from the J. Edgar Hoover days.

I wonder if this this is some sort of extension of GW's homeland surveillance?

The Church Committee (Sen. Frank Church of Idaho) investigated similar activities by the CIA and FBI in the 1970s. I wouldn't be surprised if they are acting according to some secret Executive Order signed by W. Yes, typical of a J. Edgar Hoovers operation. Hoover, who always denied we had an organized crime problem because the mob knew all about his gay side.

Jesus! … that's scary, especially the part about the flight being diverted to Israel and them being held in detention.

Not very surprising that israel knew about their plans with or without an american agent helping, I would bet they publicized their intention to break the security perimeter. I wonder if they were planning to visit gaza or the west bank, I notice they don't say in the article. Israel keeps a close eye on pro palestinian groups that may try to bring material goods to the territories, they require aid groups to have their goods inspected to prevent weapons from getting to terrorists/militants. I don't have a problem with that. I do have a problem with the fbi infiltrating peaceful anti war groups. Sounds like that wannabe red sox fan was something of an agent provocateur. Still, would like to see this reported by someone other than a (biased) blogger before coming to any conclusion.

What were they charged with?

-edit-
Ah, these are related to the RNC Welcoming Cmte folks. This also started out as a Bush admin investigation. Nobody is shocked that the FBI overstepped their authority in that time period, but these RNC folks give me a bad vibe. Not prepared to condemn outright this particular series of arrests (though it seems that terrorism related charges got dropped, leaving only the riot planning stuff).

I would like police to break up riots before they start. Fewer people get hurt.

Any followed the case since the arrests?
