Re: Is this normal wear and tear?

i think "primer" is the question. the only thing that should touch the primer is the firing pin. i'd say maybe look at the case rim on the empty shells, but that shouldn't be causing damage either. is that gouged bit steel? that's definitely not right, i'd cycle it slowly (carefully!) by hand a couple of times to see if anything is flopping around in there, but it likely requires professional attention.

eta: just saw your "noob, be kind" comment. patience.
i'm retired. what's your excuse?

Okay, better image. I think that's either being caused by the bolt as it is functioned in and out, or one of the rails as the slide is operating.

The primer is the little dot in the center of the back of a shotgun shell...and if anything hits it, believe me, you'll know it. It's what makes the whole thing go boom.

Marks like that are generally normal. As these things do what they do, they ding themselves. Just be certain to grease or oil the works well...(general rule: if it rotates, oil it and if it slides, grease it.)

Yes. Normal.

Just checked with my son...asked him to point his camera into the receiver of the 1970 Mossberg 500 I gave him. Has the same marks.

The bolt has a lever in the top of it that rides along the top of the receiver. It can be felt in the last fraction of an inch while working the slide as the bolt closes. The receiver is aluminum, the bolt is steel.

By the way, your receiver looks like it could use some more lubrication. It looks almost dry. Grease that thing up a bit and you can expect 50-100 years out of it.

I cleaned and oiled, before first use (Old new stock from 2012) then again before my shotgun tactical class (shot 5 slugs, 6 00 buck, and about 200 bird shot). I was tired at the end, forarm got stiff ans had to double pump a few times. Thanks everyone.

P.s. I am taking a class to learn the computer, but I no think I have the googles attached to my computer, do they sell that at the local haberdashery? Or, do I need to get a buggy ride to the typewriter shop in town?

The receiver on a 500 is anodized aluminum. My recollection is that aluminum anodizing is done by an acid dip, followed by some color dye. It is not very thick, hard, or wear resistant, but it does not need to be.

Now you know where to oil or grease, when lubricating. Even if you shoot it a lot, that won't change much now.
