First range trip since National and mixed results.
Everything shot at 10 yards.
Last, my best group with my S&W 617 .22 revolver, shooting double action.
Second, my best group with my S&W 627 .357 revolver, shooting single action.
Neither is very good, but better than what I started the day.
First group is my new S&W SD9VE 9mm. Ugh, wtf? I haven't shot pistol in several years, but this is insane. What is going on??? I shot about 100 rounds of 9mm, and these are pretty typical.
Re: Whelp...that kinda sucked
2Looks like you're slapping the trigger or anticipating the shot. Probably flinching before the shot breaks. Try mixing some snap caps randomly into your magazine and look for how your muzzle drops.
Re: Whelp...that kinda sucked
3Another range trip is rarely a bad thing. Do some snap caps about a hundred times before you traipse out to the range again.

4the snap cap is just a tool. a good one, but a tool. your hand is moving when you pull the trigger. you can see it happen in video games. i first noticed it in oblivion while using a bow, mashing the mouse button would move my point of aim. the vast majority of recoil and target re-accquisition happens after the bullet is gone downrange. think about what is happening to your hand when you squeeze/pull the trigger. your hand aims, your finger works the trigger, separate them.
i'm retired. what's your excuse?
Re: Whelp...that kinda sucked
5It might also have something to do with being pelted with ejecting brass. If it's flinching, I'm flinching WAY more with 9mm than 357.
Is there any way to increase the angle or force of ejection? because after the 10th time getting beaned in the forehead by hot 9mm, you kinda want to go back to wheelguns.

Re: Whelp...that kinda sucked
6i think there's a thing called ejector tuning.

Re: Whelp...that kinda sucked
8Nope. It wants to eject over me more than to the side. Which is great for the person in the next lane, but not me.
Re: Whelp...that kinda sucked
11I don't see a systematic error in your grouping. You're accurate, just not precise. Except for that bloody 9, that is. That says something about anticipation. Probably the flying brass more than the recoil, given you shoot .357 normally. Just a guess. Wear a hat? Might deflect the brass. Will definitely look fetching.
Re: Whelp...that kinda sucked
12Well, at 10 yards, it'll work, just not pretty.

Re: Whelp...that kinda sucked
13I see there are several weights of recoil springs available. If I went to a lighter recoil spring, would that have any effect on brass trajectory?
Re: Whelp...that kinda sucked
14New grips on the two revolvers and those groups are acceptable (targets are about 3" across). The 9mm is some of the worse shooting I've done, including with snub nose revolvers.featureless wrote: Wed Jun 24, 2020 1:11 am Well, at 10 yards, it'll work, just not pretty.

15Have confidence it will do what needs done, should the necessary occur. I am not ever satisfied with my shooting, but only getting out a couple times a year, at least they are all center(ish) of the target, if not the bullseye. Effective if not good can work in a pinch.senorgrand wrote: Wed Jun 24, 2020 1:15 amNew grips on the two revolvers and those groups are acceptable (targets are about 3" across). 16Well, at least they're vertical strings. I'll be hitting everything from ankles to foreheads, but the bad guys will be got...

19what is that? every third gun must be a revolver? everyone must own at least 3 revolvers?

20Only three for thee means more for me.
Nah. Three shots within three yards in fewer than three seconds. Gunfight.

21I'd rather three good shots with a revolver than three out of twenty from a 9mm.
In my experience, adequate for self defense is rarely adequate for self respect. But if I could get one ragged hole, I wouldn't have the excuse to practice.
