Yesterday Hidalgo County saw the number of new cases jump from the daily average 133 we have been seeing for the last month or so to 426. That's back in the range we were seeing in August and scary as hell. A daily new case load of over 100 is scary enough but we do not need to move back to where we were four to six months ago.

I had planned to have Thanksgiving at my sister's; just the three of us and all in the wrong age groups. But they are both out daily and exposed to the general public. If the number keep coming in like yesterday though I may decide a quite meal at home would be better.

I've turned down three separate Thanksgiving get togethers with family, friends and neighbors. Jake the Boxer and I will have a quite week with a bit of run and play (Jake, not I) in sendero approx. 75 yds wide x 1000 yds length in one direction. I'd rather take a chance on a rabid skunk than contracting CV-19.
They are planning on closing bars down again after allowing opening about a month ago. If they do, we'll probably be sued by Paxton, our criminal AG whose under fraud indictment and FBI investigation for bribery and whoremongering.

California is back to a state-wide mask mandate. Essentially, anywhere outside your home that's not a private vehicle or closed office. Able to keep 6 feet of separation seems to still be an option for walking, etc., without a mask.

Newsom is considering a state-wide curfew.

The Coasts, except NJ and PA, are doing SLIGHTLY better than the rest of country at controlling the spread, but idiocy and selfishness are Trumping science and common sense, even here.

Even though North Dakota is doing worse than South Dakota, at least the governor is finally taking steps ('way too late) to try to fix the problem, but in South Dakota, the lunatic gov is doing everything possible to make it worse!

North Dakota and South Dakota are apparently the 1st and 3rd place, respectively, world-wide record holders for positivity at the moment. It's looking good for Republican approaches to attaining 3rd world shit hole status.

Also, Chuck Grassley has the 'vid.

My county never got out of Purple Land the most restrictive state requirements and there is pressure for them to implement tighter controls. The county says they are waiting to hear from Sacramento as the governor promised a decision on curfews by Friday along with further restrictions.

LA County the elephant in the state has jumped the gun.
Starting Friday, restaurants, breweries, bars, wineries and nonessential retail establishments must close from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Additionally, outdoor social gatherings — the only type allowed — will be limited to three households, with a maximum of 15 people. Businesses currently allowed to operate indoors — including retail, offices and personal-care establishments — will be limited to 25% capacity.

Restaurants, breweries and wineries operating outdoors will be limited to 50% capacity, as will card rooms and outdoor mini-golf, go-karts and batting cages. Personal-care establishments will be required to provide services by appointment only, and everyone will be required to wear a mask, meaning facials and shaves are banned. Food and drinks cannot be served to customers at these establishments.
More stringent requirements will be implemented if L.A. County’s numbers do not improve. If the five-day average of cases in the county becomes 4,500 or more, or there are more than 2,000 hospitalizations per day, the county will implement an order allowing only essential workers and those securing essential services to leave their homes. Additionally, a countywide curfew between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. would be mandated, with essential workers exempt.

I have no sympathy for Grassley. He never defies McConnell, and like Graham and Orren Hatch, pretends to stand on high moral ground as he flip-flops 180°to support the latest Trump/McConnell desire. By giving a patina of honesty and fairness he polishes the turd but that just makes things worse. He COULD have fought McConnell to get Covid relief passed, but he didn't and now his state, Iowa, has more per capita cases than any other states but the Dakotas. Cases and deaths in his state are exploding...and HE could have done the right thing, but didn't. So fuck'em. I'll save my sympathies for more deserving folks.

Agreed, YT. Don't wish it on anyone, but I have zero sympathy for the Repug leaders popping hot. They shit the bed, so they might as well get comfortable in it. Perhaps their perspective will change if more of them suffocate on their own slime.

No. They will go to the grave believing they are correct.

Tarrant County (Fort Worth) set a new state record 2112 new cases in one day. But Governor Abbott says no change, stay the course. Ignore the jagged rocks and shallow water.

Yesterday Tuesday, my county set a record for the highest single day with 1,756 new confirmed cases. Today Wednesday is the second highest, 1,613 new confirmed cases. In cumulative number of cases since the pandemic started, my county is now second only to LA County in CA. Since November 1st there have been 13,346 new cases. Deaths were up by 20 for a total of 1,118. Hospitalizations keep climbing, now up to 480 confirmed and suspected and 111 in ICU beds.

yes, it rolls off the tongue so trippingly: "quarter-of-a-million" not so smoothly as "half-a-million" or "one-million" but patience, in time, we'll get there. let's see, one percent of 320 million, that's 3.2 million dead americans. so much winning. :problem:

Another 11 cases in my town. Now 750 cases, and another grammar school had a case. Another death, up to 73.
388 cases in Essex County and we're now over 31K cases and 1958 deaths
NJ: 3700 cases today, 36 deaths. But we are 17th on the list of new cases. We'll pass 300k cases in 2 days
We are still 5th on total deaths but most were in the spring.

In less than 10 months, Covid-19 has killed more people than strokes, suicides and car crashes typically do in a full year -- combined.

Amongst the worst natural disasters of the 21st century, Covid-19 takes the gold, with a global toll of 1.34 million to date. By contrast, these are the worst natural disasters by death toll from the past 50 years, excluding disease and famine. AIDS has killed ~32 million since its discovery.

1970 Bhola cyclone: over 224,000 dead, possibly in excess of 500,000
1975 Typhoon Nina & the Bangqiao dam disaster: over 229,000 dead
1976 Tangshan earthquake: over 242,000 dead - some estimates run north of 655,000
1991 Bangladesh cyclone: over 138,000 dead
2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami: death toll estimates just shy of 228,000
2010 Haiti earthquake: Haitian death toll estimates top out at 316,000, but may be inflated; 220,000 is more commonly accepted.

I've used the names for each disaster from Wikipedia, in case anyone wants to compare. Yes, you'll get larger annual death tolls from things like cancer, cardiovascular diseases related to air pollution, etc. Gun related violence? Not so much.

More than 900 staff members across the Midwest Mayo Clinic system have been diagnosed with Covid-19 over the last 14 days, a spokesperson told CNN. That's about 30% of the total number who have tested positive since March. "Our staff are being infected mostly due to community spread (93% of staff infections), and this impacts our ability to care for patients," Kelley Luckstein wrote to CNN in a Wednesday email.

Across the Midwest, Mayo Clinic currently has about 1,500 staff members with work restrictions related to Covid-19 exposures or diagnosis, Luckstein said. The Midwest Mayo Clinic system consists of clinics, hospitals and other facilities that serve patients in Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin.
Parts of the health system have already been overwhelmed by the surge in patients, while other facilities are preparing for what's to come. In northwest Wisconsin, the Mayo Clinic Health System said last week that 100% of its hospital beds were full.

"The public urgently needs to treat COVID-19 as the health emergency it is to prevent the health care system from being overwhelmed," the health system said in last week's statement.
Meanwhile, Williams said in a media briefing this week that Mayo Clinic was boosting its ICU capacity in a Rochester, Minnesota, hospital to be able to handle a surge in Covid-19 patients. She added the system expects to see a jump in hospitalization rates over the next two to four weeks.
In the video update, Williams said they're also seeing more patients transferred from hospitals outside of the Mayo Clinic Health System. "Which just tells us hospitals elsewhere, in Minnesota, in Iowa, in the Dakotas, in surrounding states, are overwhelmed because of this surge."

Posted this on another forum in a turd death cult discussion this morning:
Read article this morning re ex follower of Jim Jones saying Trumps mouthings sound just like Jones. Get the purple Kool-Aid ready. I wonder how many of the 74 million would actually drink it. I'd guess at least 10-15%.
Another poster (registered repub) said he expected the percentage would be much higher.

Guess it doesn't matter whether CV-19 or Kool-Aid except the former could possibly get non-believers, too. Sickening.

That's good, the rural areas just don't have beds and staff. Imperial County just to the south of me on the border with Mexico was swamped with cases in the spring and sent patients to the surrounding counties including mine. The governor had to threaten their county board of supervisors because then wouldn't impose strict mask and quarantine requirements, hope they learned this time.
