I have plenty of ammo for all my guns and more booze than most bars. Plenty of dry & canned goods. What I don't have is a generator to keep fridge / freezer running should we lose power. Need to work on that.

Recently ordered a whole house standby generator but still waiting for it to get shipped. Still no ETA but there is a payment due already.

Portable generators are a wonderful thing for refers/freezers in the short term. Handy, small overall, simple to connect usually.

One has no idea how much fuel they consume past a few days of use, and as most of them are gassers, transport and storage of same liquid comes with 'souring' and fire hazards. Diesel is better in those areas, but the machines are quantum $. Propane is almost ideal, as a large tank can be had and kept full via deliveries as long as possible but it doesn't have the density/gallon of liquid fuels.

As this is planning for future outages, look into a photovoltaic system sized to cover small demands such as lighting and running those appliances. The outlay will be more (panel prices have come down tho), but the worries about fuel go away. Wind generation is amazingly powerful, but fickle. It can be added to solar for another source easily.

Odd what we'll do in persuit of that comfy 60Hz. Long live the grid!

rs ago a friend thought his kids were watching too much TV, so he rigged an old Delco car alternator belted to the rear rim of a ten-speed. Built a stand so it wouldn't tip over, and hooked it to a little portable Sony TV.

"You wanna watch, you gotta ride".

Did the trick. Sub phone charger for TV nowadays.
