Took a long lunch and braved the grocery store.
Fresh fruits and vegis were abundant and cheap.
Frozen beef patties were also in stock -- bought 5 lbs worth. This was my pleasant surprise of the trip. Ground beef has been hard to get lately.
No: eggs, baking powder, plain rice cakes, yeast, canned soup or canned chili.
No TP, disinfecting wipes or hand sanitizer of course.
I'm guessing I bought nearly 50 lbs of food.
Re: Coronavirus Prepping
353Yeah -- but we went from spending several hundred dollars a month on eating out to $0, so it's been a good tradeoff. Plus, the pantry is slowly expanding. I needed vanilla extract and bought the last two.

Re: Coronavirus Prepping
354Agreed. Flour and other baking supplies are just as hard to find as reasonably priced bagels or cream cheese. This is getting strange.

355Exactly, I don't mind the grocery bills at all right now. Even with stocking up to near prepper amounts of certain things, I bet we've still saved money.senorgrand wrote:Yeah -- but we went from spending several hundred dollars a month on eating out to $0, so it's been a good tradeoff. 356Spending more here because prices are higher for what I can find.

360Nice!
Went to Vons today -- the most expensive store in town. I was able to secure FOUR small containers of baking powder! They also had eggs!
Other than yeast and disinfecting wipes, I'm in pretty good for the next week or two.

361Now, baking soda I can see getting four boxes or cans. But baking powder--you'll still have two when the youngest gets married. Mark my words.

363I'm stocked now with paper goods for awhile. I haven't been able to find yeast either, I'll try our local Vons tomorrow. Vons are the most expensive in my town too, but Pavillions, Gelsons and Jensens are even more expensive.senorgrand wrote: Wed Apr 01, 2020 3:42 pm Nice!

Re: Coronavirus Prepping
364we were getting a little anxious there for a bit, only 6 rolls of tp in the house. so imagine my delight when i happened into the dollar store just as they were setting up the display for what they arrived that morning! not wanting to be greedy i bought a six-pack (no, not beer) and when i got home there she is, holding up the 12 pack she found in the back of the top shelf in the pantry. we forgot we had it. that's not hoarding, is it?
i'm retired. what's your excuse?
Re: Coronavirus Prepping
365While I have a goodly supply of the yeast packets, I was able to buy a pound block of Baker's Yeast from eBay. It may all be sold out by now.highdesert wrote: Wed Apr 01, 2020 4:03 pmI'm stocked now with paper goods for awhile. I haven't been able to find yeast either, I'll try our local Vons tomorrow. Fed my 2 "concubines" this afternoon--sourdough starters!
But we're all out of beef, and mostly out of fish (other than canned). Got lots of chicken though.

367With women in the house, it's important to have some TP in back stock.

Re: Coronavirus Prepping
370Yup, not as bad as they were during the initial rush. Went to Vons, no yeast but that's ok I really don't need to bake. My regular regional supermarkets have most things including TP but I'm fine. Yes fresh fruits and veggies are plentiful but perishable, so I've been buying more frozen and canned as back ups especially canned soups.senorgrand wrote: Tue Mar 31, 2020 5:06 pm Took a long lunch and braved the grocery store.

After spending a lot initially to stock up, I also calculated that I'm not spending as much since I'm not going out to eat and definitely not spending as much money on gasoline, so I'm saving.

Re: Coronavirus Prepping
371Went to grocery store today and they were totally out of grits - instant, 5 minute, all the goddamned grits.
First time in a long time that I thought about flipping a car and setting it on fire. Fortunately we have recently discovered overnight oats so I decided to let reason rule for another day.

Re: Coronavirus Prepping
372Wtf? No grits?!? Yeah I definitely would have been tempted to start a tire fire in the parking lot for that. Grits are one thing we make sure we always have plenty of. Stored correctly, they last forever.blackcarbine wrote:Went to grocery store today and they were totally out of grits - instant, 5 minute, all the goddamned grits.

373We do have one unopened container in backup, but I’m already getting nervous itch just thinking about it.kronkmusic wrote: Thu Apr 02, 2020 6:07 pmWtf? No grits?!? I don't get grits, but my grandad used to make corncakes -- so I always have cornmeal on hand. That stuff would survive a nuclear war.
