in my limited experience, red dots are good for quicker target acquisition because you don't actually have to line up the sights. but in terms of accuracy, no better than iron sights. so their value depends on how you intend to use them.
When your eyes suck and your glasses aren't on, red dots are indeed more accurate than the blurirons. :)

I have three red dots for my pistols and several Leupold Carbine optics on a few of my rifles. They are great for range sessions and competitions in nice weather, but I live in Oregon where it rains. It's just too easy for the lenses to get fouled with even the slightest sprinkle or a little dust. I get lens covers for all my scopes, and really wish the Leupold Carbine red dots had that option.

When they are holstered, the shape of the red dot makes a perfect little cup to catch whatever might fall in them, and I find them to be a lot of work to get clean. Most of them are small enough that you can get the center of the lens moderately clean, but it's extremely difficult to get the entire sight window clean, which is already very small to begin with.

My other issue with red dots on pistols is the real estate they take up on the slide. It makes it so racking the slide must really be done on the front of the slide only. I can do that, but in a defensive situation, or even clearing a malfunction in a match, my training and instinct is to sweep the slide at the rear, which will then put a big smudge on the front of the lens.

I think they also have the potential to make a person less good at using irons. I prefer high visibility irons. I need to get bi-focals to optimize the irons, but that's something I need to do for many other tasks as well, and my astigma makes shooting a red dot without my glasses impossible.

Final verdict for me is I use them for Rimfire Challenge or plinking in the summer or under cover, but I use irons for USPSA, concealed carry, and basically everthing else that isn't scoped.

Depends.
When you get to the age where you depend on Depends®™, figure the eyesight is working as well as "the southland".
Ya wanna hit what ya aim at without cranking your head into a reclining aspect just to get those wonderous progressive lenses to do their thing by letting you catch a glimpse of the front sight as you fall your ass over backwards?

Where everything you deposited in your Depends®™ can be shared with everyone around you as it squishes out from that which was supposed to contain it...(yeah, go ahead, try to get that visual outta your head...!)

Finding the dot is a real issue at first -- the pistol indexes differently. But is should be cured with a few hours of dry fire practice. Once past that hump, the advantages should prevail.

I mostly agree with Tonguengroover regarding having one on a carry gun, especially the "hanging up on stuff"part.

I still like my shot groups better if I'm using one for target shooting, mostly as a function of my age-related Presbyopia. My time-to-target is a little better with fixed sights (because, well, that's what I've taught myself with), but I bought a SigSauer Romeo Zero a while back because I thought I'd be able to see it better for myself, and that got mounted to the only optic-ready gun we had at the time (Sig P365XL), and because it's the easiest gun in the safe to rack the slide on, that became my wife's carry gun. I shaved the holsters I had for it to accept the sight, which took about five minutes each.

I recently picked up a used CZ P09 from GunJoker, largely because it already has a Viper Venom RDS on it. I've been working with my P07 a lot lately (Mantis X2, to save on bullets), so I thought my natural aim for the P09 would be pretty close, but it took me a few mock draws to get to finding the red dot as rapidly as I was finding the fixed sights on my P07, which I find odd.

So, long story short, I think in some applications I will find the red dot more useful, and in other applications, less so. YMMV, and to each their own.

Eventually I'll figure out this signature thing and decide what I want to put here.

Seen a couple guns ready made for the red dots like the Maxx-9 and Walther PDP compact that I'm interested in buying.
My Sig P320 RX Compact came with an integrated Romeo 1 red dot and raised tritium iron sights so you can use them if you prefer.

I think I'd like one for the nightstand with a light. But not for carry. I'm just too used to open sight.

OK after reading this thread over again I am interested in getting a red dot for my Ruger Max 9 since it optic ready and eyes are definitely going. The only other red dot I have is on my AR556
I just don't want to spend as much on the optic as the cost of the gun. Do I have to? lol

So here are the options;
Crimson Trace® 1500 Series Hex™ Wasp™ Holosun 407K Holosun 507K
JPoint™ MRD Shield RMS Shield RMS2 Shield RMSc
Shield RMSw Shield SMS Shield SMS2 Shield SMSc
Sig Romeo Zero Sightmark® Mini Shot A-Spec M3 Swampfox Sentinel

Ok I read about that. Someone said to heat it just to soften it up and bend it in a little.
Other than that is it good in the sun? Thats some thing I am worried about.

Check out theHolosun 407k or 507k. Mine above is the 507k. Around $300. Price is not great, not terrible. Performance is great.

I do not know. I don't have access to outdoor ranges and don't want to scare the shit out of my neighbors checking it out in my back yard.

OK featureless, taking your word on this one. LOL

Optics came in like quick! Ordered it yesterday.
I guess I should read the instructions although I did watch a Ruger video on how to put an optic on the Max 9. Seems easy. And from what I've gathered doing research (many articles and videos) Holson added in some screws to accommodate installing the 407K and 507K on the Max 9.
I may wait to install it until I'm ready to go to the range. The laser may help although I shouldn't need it me thinks.

My eyes are just crap, I keep thinking I should go to some sort of optics. Then I go to the range, and as it turns out, even though I can't really see the front sight...miraculously I still shoot some pretty small groups. I won't abandon my iron sights until my performance degrades a good deal further. But its really nice to know I have options.

This was 12 shots 15 yards, off hand, two handed hold. Load was 148gr HBWC's. And yea, those two flyers bug me.
