I would think they would have worked off a Winchester 1895 as a base and maybe tilted the mag to get a better throw on the lever.

13No thanks, too ugly for me, and its looks like the lever would be very awkward to operate, with both your thumb hanging up in the thumb hole and possibly hitting the back of you hand on the magazine.
