A Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF) poll released 9/12/19 shows most people favor single pay, but it's not by a huge margin only 53/45 and it has gone up and down over the years like the gun control issue. Like presidential polls it's a national poll so we don't know how it plays in each of the 50 states where the presidency is won.

To get to 80% I still think people want options. As much as I'd like to see health insurance companies fade away, hundreds of thousands of people work for them and those people won't vote to get rid of their jobs. Hypothetically, everyone gets a basic health care policy paid by tax money. People could receive their basic plan through a single payer entity or through a health insurance company it's individual choice. Health insurance companies could offer additional coverage and benefits (tiered plans) on top of the basic plan (already paid for) at additional costs. Basic plan coverage offered through public or private would be tightly controlled by a public entity so they are all the same basic plans.
