The more I hear Bernie speak, the more sense Bernie makes.
Maybe a tiny bit less for defense to fund a huge amount (comparatively) for poverty reduction?

One solution that actually worked for the chronically homeless was put into place in Utah- housing first, which saw a 91% reduction in chronic homelessness due to the program. Then they cut the funding off. Guess what happened.

Agreed that it's a different category than some of the rest, but honestly, can we say that the model of housing first wouldn't help to alleviate some from both categories? Food, shelter, sanitation. Those three things are critical. Universal healthcare is another, but that benefits all, not just the homeless. And they should not be on the reliance of charity to provide it. Taxing religious organizations as businesses would be a start to pay for it.

Sorry Utah's politicians dropped the ball on homelessness, they had a good start. Housing first is a model that says permanent housing before tackling other problems like drug addiction, unemployment... Social problems like homelessness are a lot like public health problems. Public health experts thought measles was conquered and went off on other things like gun control and meanwhile vaccination rates went down and anti-vacs wacko propaganda soared on the Internet and it became a public health problem again. Politicians just put out fires.

No they don’t put out the fires. They just knock them down and let them smolder until they flare up again.

Trump reveals a motivation for his anti-homelessness push: Foreign real estate tenants
https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics ... e-tenants/
Trump was asked about possible plans to address homelessness on the flight and said it was something he was considering.
“We can’t let Los Angeles, San Francisco and numerous other cities destroy themselves by allowing what’s happening,” Trump said, according to a report from the White House news pool. “And I’m speaking to tenants — in some cases foreign people, foreign tenants — but they have where they’re tenants in buildings throughout various cities in California, and other places … where they want to leave the country. They can’t believe what’s happening.”
He mentioned police getting sick of addressing homelessness problems, then returning to those tenants.
“We have people living in our … best highways, our best streets, our best entrances to buildings and pay tremendous taxes, where people in those buildings pay tremendous taxes, where they went to those locations because of the prestige,” he said. “In many cases, they came from other countries, and they moved to Los Angeles or they moved to San Francisco because of the prestige of the city, and all of a sudden they have tents. Hundreds and hundreds of tents and people living at the entrance to their office building. And they want to leave.

Yes, a strange statement to make when one is the POTUS - really strange.
But Trump has an evil genius for wedge issues that divide the voters. He is betting that just about 100% of people who defend the homeless are "never Trump" voters - and he is probably right.
He is also betting that a fair number of voters in the middle are appalled at the homeless and would love to have someone to blame. Trump is effectively making demons of the Democratic leadership of large US cities. I am not sure if this issue has staying power and can rally the kinds of emotion that the "caravans of illegal immigrants" raised. But his play is both transparent and likely an indicator of his 2020 campaign strategy.

Donnie is again stirring the pot again, he's in CA for two days for fund raisers. The first in LA and the second at an undisclosed Bay Area location. Democrats aren't the only ones who come to CA with hands out, he's expected to leave with $15 million for his reelection campaign.
