IN MAJOR SHIFT, WALGREENS AND CVS ASK CUSTOMERS TO LEAVE THEIR GUNS OUTSIDE

Walgreens, CVS and Wegmans announced the new policy Thursday afternoon, following announcements from Walmart and Kroger on Wednesday.

'We support the efforts of individuals and groups working to prevent gun violence, and continually review our policies and procedures to ensure our stores remain a safe environment,' CVS said in a statement.

All of the retailers will still allow law enforcement officers to openly carry firearms.

Meh. This is just asking people not to be asshats who want to intimidate and scare strangers.

Now if they start banning concealed carry, I'll have a problem with it.

There’s nothing more important than the safety of our customers & employees. The sight of someone with a gun can be alarming, and we don’t want anyone to feel that way at Wegmans. For this reason, we prefer that customers not openly carry firearms into our stores.

I agree, hopefully this is the line. I'd also have a problem with banning CC firearms.

I can’t open carry in my City(Philadelphia) anyway.
Although PA is a open carry State Philly is not a part of Pennsylvania when it comes to carrying Firearms.

Now Albertson's has joined the group is asking customers not to open carry. It's a huge chain of companies like Kroger. Besides Albertson's stores they own: Safeway, Lucky, Acme, Randalls, Shaw's, Tom Thumb... It's owned by private equity firm Cerberus.

Isn't THAT a right, too?

The only reason a civilian open carries in a sub-/urban environment is for intimidation.

I open carry when I expect to encounter snakes, I have dogs with me, and I am in woodsy areas. I really don't see a good reason to OC a long gun in a grocery store unless you want OC banned in grocery stores. I always assumed that was the whole strategy. Now armed white men can scream about being oppressed by liberals and demand to do something that would get any POC shot and killed. If this were not so obvious, I would probably support the OC movement.

They do that on social media, I hear. Act like jerks and push the rules so they can claim victimhood when the rules are enforced.

I'd give someone more latitude to make those choices in a private space (home, office, etc) than a place where the public is invited (store, mall, etc). I think open carry should be legal but just not something one does. I just don't know how to enforce social norms around it, particularity given that the people most likely to open carry are also the ones least likely to be swayed by social norming.

I posted this in the WalMart thread but once again, out here in the rural oilfields of South Texas it's not uncommon to see someone open carrying.

That's different. I think that gun culture is something that non-gun owners don't understand. Around many gun owners and those who don't mind open carry, it is no big deal. I have had disagreements with other gun owners here in GA (Trump voters) who believe that "no one needs more than 10 round mags" but Trump and Pence can do no wrong.

If you travel or live between these gun/no-gun worlds, you realize that some people are horrified and frightened by the sight of a box of bullets (I've seen that happen). My new employer doesn't allow weapons on the grounds or in the parking lot regardless of state law.

Most people don't even see concealed weapons "print" in public (I often do). Those people vote. I would rather CC and not let them freak out.

I generally agree, but at the same time I am concerned that always concealing will give people a false impression that guns are not being carried in public at all, and when that happens concealed carry will become as problematic as open carry is now.

Concealed carry makes carrying tolerable to those who don't want to see or know or talk about firearms. If you are carrying in the open, they might just vote to ban all carrying because they want you to keep your guns in the privacy of your own home. If they are going to ban carry, they are going to do it regardless of what they see. The people who would vote to ban carry probably never see OC anyway.

Open carry is legal in a Class I city if you have a License To Carry Firearms. I personally don't open carry anywhere other than a range or deep in the woods, but I'd think in parts of Philadelphia open carry would be more dangerous than being unarmed.
