It’s Time to Stop Arguing Whether Gun Laws Work

We have long known that firearm injury is one of the top three causes of death among youth; causing twice as many deaths as cancer, five times as many as heart disease and 15 times as many as infections. And now, based on a study released this week from the American Academy of Pediatrics, we have more evidence showing that strict firearm safety legislation can save lives.

This study specifically looked at legislation requiring universal background checks for firearm purchase, universal background checks for ammunition purchase, and identification requirement for firearms. Texas has some of the weakest firearm safety laws in the nation and because of this, it is not surprising that over 3,000 Texans die from firearm injury every single year.

This study is a call to action during the interim session to revisit firearm safety legislation and urge our legislators to propose legislation that, at a minimum, requires universal background checks for firearm and ammunition purchase, and mandates an identification requirement for firearms.

According to the UCR, which compiles all the info on deaths by types of item every year, New Jersey, with some of the most strict gun laws in the country, has more firearms deaths (which always conveniently include suicide for some reason) than Texas per capita.

This doctor should stick to being a pediatrician and stop being used as a pawn by the gun control lobby.

“How are you sleeping?”

A simple question. One that I ask all of my patients.

“Well,” a soft-spoken teenager went on to explain, “A boy in my class shot himself. I saw it happen and now I’m having nightmares.”

Of course the teenager was traumatize by it, not unusual to have nightmares. If he saw that same boy jump in front of a vehicle or jump off a building he'd also be traumatized. Soldiers and police also experience trauma and often need counseling to get through it. One opinion article.

Maybe he should worry about people acquiring antibiotic-resistant shit in hospitals instead and how to fix that.

Texas still has one of the most concerning maternal mortality rates in the U.S., particularly among black mothers, who die during childbirth at twice the rate white mothers do.

If you're an American woman, your chances of dying from pregnancy-related causes are higher than someone who lives in Sweden, Poland or Libya.

Because the pediatrician is in an article about it. Don't ask for logic. Just become emotional and send your evil firearms to me. For the children.

The only thing this pediatrician has proven is that Donald Trump does not have a monopoly on “alternative facts”.

It's fairly inconvenient now in California to buy ammo with the point of purchase background check. You just have to wait while they process. If there are a couple of people already ahead of you, you have to wait.

I'm not sure how, it just does! Because a doctor (with no knowledge of firearms or firearms laws apparently) says so.

Like the abortion debate, both sides ignore facts and logic. Broad prohibition won't stop abortion, suicides, murders, or vices. Root cause analysis, anyone?
