Cub Scout camp at Chicopee Sportstmen’s Club in Granby canceled over safety concerns
According to the Western Massachusetts Council of the Boy Scouts of America, the camp was canceled by Granby’s health department, which inspected the club two days before the event was to begin, and determined it was unsafe.
“Despite operating a safe, fun, and quality day camp for the past 6 summers at this location, the health department refused to accept any alternatives for operations,” the council said in a letter to parents over the weekend.
This letter to the editor from last year is from a current member of the Granby Board of Health who was present at the inspection of the range:“Last year (the camp) was awesome,” she said.
Herbert T. Abelson: Confident after gun violence protests
After controversial decision to stop Cub Scouts camp at gun club, Granby Board of Health plans Wednesday meetingConfident after gun violence protests
The huge, successful student-led protests against gun violence gives me confidence for the future and direction of our great country in the face of largely tone-deaf comments and lobbying efforts as well as lack of action by our congressional leaders.

GRANBY — The Board of Health had “grave concerns” about the safety of Cub Scouts preparing to attend a day camp at a gun club in town, Chairman Richard Bombardier said. But the board also violated the state’s Open Meeting Law when it prevented the camp from going forward, he said.
The board plans to meet Wednesday at 11:15 a.m. at the municipal building, 215B West State St. One member said it will be an opportunity for the public to ask questions about the decision.
He said board member Herb Abelson, elected earlier this year, participated in the inspection along with the municipality’s contracted health inspector, Ernest Mathieu. Abelson declined to comment on what happened during the inspection.
