2 workers, gunman dead at Calif. Ford dealership
MORGAN HILL, Calif. — A man who had just been fired from a Northern California Ford dealership shot and killed two employees and then killed himself Tuesday evening, police and witnesses said.

Police called to the Ford Store Morgan Hill found a man shot dead of an apparently self-inflicted wound on the ground outside some service bays.

"In his hand was a firearm, a handgun," police Sgt. Bill Norman said at a news conference in Morgan Hill, southeast of San Jose in the San Francisco Bay Area.

You're most likely to get "active shooter"ed at work, according to the FBI. Of the 50 active shootings that occurred between 2016 and 2017, 17 were at "areas of commerce". Did you know that California, despite its mighty stack upon stack of gun laws, came in second place in the number of active shooter events during that time period? We had 5 incidents, tying with looseygoosey Florida and only outdone by the 6 that occurred in looseygoosey Texas. Clearly, we need more gun laws because they work so well.

Also of note, citizens engaged the shooter in 10 of those 50 incidents and stopped the incident in 8 of them, 4 of those were CCW people.

Ford asks Alabama car dealer to end shotgun giveaway after California shooting
Ford Motor Co. has asked a Ford dealership in Alabama to stop giving out certificates for free 12-gauge shotguns to anyone who buys a new or used vehicle.

The automaker told the dealership late Wednesday that the promotion was inappropriate after three people died Tuesday evening during a mass shooting at a California Ford dealership. There, a man who had been fired from his job at the dealership in the San Francisco Bay Area fatally shot two employees, then himself, according to local media reports.

"So it’s done. They’ve ended our promotion. I’m very disappointed," Colin Ward, general manager of Chatom Ford in Chatom, Alabama, said Wednesday.
Because potential ownership of a shotgun in Alabama is equivalent to murders in California.

Or because it plays to the acronym Found On Road Dead. Not good marketing for Ford. Such a shitty product you need a shotgun to "fix" it.
 When I was growing up it was "Fix Or Repair Daily". They do have the number one selling pickup truck, the F-150. Years ago when I lived in Montana almost all the pickups (Cowboy Cadillacs) had gun racks for their rifle or shotgun. Of course back then bars gave you a "to go" cup for your drink when they closed.

I leased a Ford by accident 3 years ago. Ford Fusion - my lease is up in 2 months. I will be glad to give it back, but only because it is really boring. The car drives and handles well. My only real gripes are "boring" and "poor gas mileage".

(The accident was that I was very part time living in Vegas and was paying as much as $600 per month on rental cars when I visited. So I went looking for the cheapest possible lease on a decent car and leased the Ford. 2 month's later, I decided to move to Las Vegas full time and got stuck with the Ford as my full time car. It is an OK car. Never had any mechanical trouble, but then I lease for 3 years - what do you expect? Did I mention that the car is boring?)

But if I was buying a truck tomorrow? I think I would likely end up with an F-150.

Boring? For everyday transportation, I rather like boring ‘ol reliability. Currently “enjoying” a 50 mpg Prius. Can’t say I’d prefer the excitement of waking up wondering if the Fiat is gonna start each morning.

Want excitement? -take up shooting or skydiving or something... oh, waitaminute.

A few years ago there was a motor vehicle accident, can't remember exactly where in So Cal but the newspaper article said the vehicles involved were a Ford Fusion and a Ford 150 pickup (older model). The two people in the Fusion survived, the person in the F-150 died. I remember thinking then that the Fusion had to be one tough vehicle.

Platforms: CAD has allowed car makers to reinvent the platforms to optimize for each of crah survivability, handling, field economy and more. There are some real tradeoffs of course. One cannot simultaneously seek maximal torque and maximal fuel savings - these goals are in opposition.

The fusion is a modern replacement for the Taurus platform (first released in the early 1980s.) The Fusion is cheaper to build and has far better crumple zone absorption and airbags.

The F-150 truck cannot retain all of its historic "truckness" and have the best crumple zones. I am not a mechanical engineer, but I know a bunch and they tell me these crumple zones are why many modern cars cannot tow a trailer at all. They also keep a truck from having a rigid enough body and frame.

I love the look and style of cars from the 1950s - really love them. But I won't get in one for a drive-about because I am all too aware of the safety gaps from the era.
