Newton high school teacher put on leave after report he showed student a photo of a gun
A Newton high school teacher who was once a semifinalist for a statewide teacher of the year award was placed on administrative leave this month after a report was made to school officials that he showed a student a photo of a gun in class, according to an e-mail sent by a school official and obtained by the Globe.

A district spokeswoman said the matter was reported to police and investigated, and the contract Newton South High School had with English teacher Deven Antani has not been renewed for next year. His last day was Thursday, school officials said.

“While we are unable to share more details of this specific situation, we can tell you that Mr. Antani will not return to South next year and no longer works for the Newton Public Schools,” Newton Public Schools spokeswoman Julie McDonough said in an e-mail.

Show a picture of a gun to a student, lose your job and probably your career.

I am STAYING in the closet WRT Guns and Work.
The media flashes photos of guns all the time. Wonder when they start getting sued over it.

Exactly.

The news articles about the Coast Guard Officer, Christopher Hasson, show his collection with impunity, but let a teacher show a picture of a weapon and he gets the ax.

But as I said above, this is the scary part: who knew it was against the rules to show a photo of a gun - granted we have not SEEN the photo - maybe it is a scary photo.

Really surprised at the Boston Globe, once a great newspaper. That's about the level of a tabloid - wait until you get the facts or don't waste the space. School districts have really gone overboard. Max's links - there are pics of UK politicians and even the royals drinking a pint, when did they get so puritanical. And as for the bikini, teaching jobs don't pay a lot for all the education required and it's common for teachers to have second or third jobs.

Newton Teacher Loses Job Following Complaints From Students
"He was very inappropriate throughout the entire year," said the student.

After they spoke up, they say Antani approached them during class in late May.

"He took out his phone and showed us a picture of his firearm, and he described it as a Ruger, and said his wife was getting a Glock and he couldn't wait until he could bring it to school," said the student, who took the image of a gun as a threat or retaliation for lodging a complaint.
Interesting that a teacher in MA would think he would be able to "bring it to school"--ever. Also, prosecution is not required for his MA LTC to be revoked on the basis of suitability, which means his firearms would be confiscated.

Playing devil's advocate, without examples we don't know what that means.

More info than the Boston Globe article and hopefully the district has enough evidence to defend a wrongful termination lawsuit if Antani decides to sue.

School sponsored sporting clays is coming on big in MN. Probably not so much in the major metro areas, where meat is grown in vacuum packed bags.
