Flying to California with a pistol

A friend of mine lost his mother about a month ago and she lived in San Diego California and he asked me to fly with him there to pick up her car and drive back with him.
Given this will be a few days of driving and I'm not sure what kind of motels or hotels we'll be staying at I was thinking that bringing a pistol along might not be a bad idea.
But I'm not familiar with the laws in California. I know California doesn't recognize Wisconsin CCW permit but can I bring a pistol along with me there or do I need a permit to have one in my possession?
Is this as big of a PITA as I hear it is or would this be fairly hassle free?

AFAIK, unless you're a LEO, there's no way to carry a handgun with you legally into California. You can google it, but but states like Ca, NY, and NJ simply do not permit non-residents to carry.

I think this is the closest you get to legal pistol carry in Cali.
I wouldn't.

10 round magazine maximum. Must be transported in a locked container and unloaded. Possession is fine.

I know I can't carry in California but I can carry in almost every other state on the way home. But I had not thought of the magazine capacity. That's a good point.

All of this. Generally, California law also allows a loaded handgun within your place of residence (even a temporary one like a hotel). Must be cased and locked otherwise.

CA doesn't recognize any other states' CC licenses/permits, it's not just WI. Once you get out of CA, you can carry in many of the surrounding states. This is a unique situation but if you anticipate more traveling in the future you might consider a non-resident CC license/permit recognized in more states - AZ ,UT and FL are probably the most popular. Drive carefully.

The only states that I would not be able to carry in would be California obviously and then New Mexico and Illinois. But I don't think we'll be going through New Mexico.
