If it makes you feel any better, the blade is made out of VG10 steel, which is decent. If you have the right tool and know how to sharpen it, it can get really sharp and stay that way for a while. This particular knife also comes with IKBS ball bearings at the pivot, so it will fly open with just a little push.

I need another knife like I need a sixth finger. The only reason I haven't picked one of these is because I'm saving for a gun...

I carry a Spyderco Meadowlark 2.
Probably not what you were looking for but it's lightweight, solid and has great ergonomics.
It comes in a few different versions but mine is the black with a plain edge.

YankeeTarheel wrote: Sun Mar 17, 2019 4:04 pm I keep coming back to the Leatherman tools. Despite all the knives I have, I find I always reach for one of 3:
The Leatherman Skeletool, Leatherman Squirt, or a Husky folding razor knife.

And my keychain always has a Swiss-Tech Utili-key which has been through airport security probably 100 times and never once been questioned.
I agree. I have Leatherman and the Husky razor. I also love my Ka-Bars. The bucklite folder and fixed are my favorite to carry now. I use them all, though.

I went through a blade phase and have all I would ever need. One nice thing about living in the US is the choices available.

I have also found that the 99 cent folders in the Walmart camping area are worth far more than 99 cents in value. I use those to cut stuff that will dull my nice blades and gunk them up with hard to clean gunk. I keep one in the car for stuff like that.

As for my current EDC, they are both Victorinox products.

Victorinox Swisstool Spirit S

Victorinox Rambler (with black scales)

Multitools are just more useful, I have done so many things with them. I don't have much use for quick opening knives anymore, I carry a gun for self defense.

Ah, I see that you're going for the Al Mar Eagle. A beautiful classic knife made in Japan. AUS-8 steel blade is a bit on the low end for today's standard, but unless you use it heavily you won't know the difference.

If you can find it, that Maserin is available in many colors.

These are made for Spyderco in China and now cost what the Seki City, Japan ones used to cost, around $30 more or less...I just checked prices: My $30 Delica now has an MSRP of $120, not $70! I shoulda invested in them! It's a great knife but I don't see it as a $120. pocket knife.

the Al Mar is an excellent knife, the ultralight version is less pretty, but has some up-sides and definitely has an aesthetic charm of its own

another thing to consider (but you'd have to add a thumb stud, which isn't a very big deal) is the Mercator K55K, not an operator's knife, but famous first because they were so popular with German soldiers that Americans thought they were military issue, second because unlike the Italian Stiletto styled switchblade, the K55K was the actual preferred pocketknife of 1950s street gangs in the major cities of the northeastern US

truly a classic, available in a couple of sizes and the choice between carbon and stainless blade

Edit to add: MUCH easier to carry in a pocket than the Buck, but just as much knife

The Mercator is a cool knife but it's carbon steel, not stainless. You gotta remember to clean and oil it once in a while.

However, if you so inclined, you can blue the blade. You'll get a patina on the handle and the blade!

Stiff, you might read a little more closely. Stainless has been an option for many years.

My bad, the last time I looked at it was probably a decade ago.

That's a purdy knife you won't mind using to open the UPS box or dropping in the mud, two things a pocket knife should excel at.

I bet you can even buy them by the case so you always have a backup in case you lose one.

I would pick the Italian steak knife, it looks so sleek. Well, maybe after the Enzo Birk.
