I heard that 1 in 6 "elite" college students are "legacy" admissions and that 1% kids are nearly 80 times more likely to get into those colleges. They are NOT 70-80 times more qualified, though. Even with their advantages, they are not often that much more qualified.

My dad used to complain about the very same things we talk about. Reagan was busting unions. In the 70s, people harkened back to a mythical time when "people worked for life in a company that took care of them" which is something I heard people talking about last week. Did that ever happen??

I don't think it was ever "good" for the bulk of people. America was never so "great" for most people. The myths we have all heard and wanted to believe are just BS. I don't know that it will ever change in my lifetime. *sigh*
Yeah, legacy admissions is affirmative action for the affluent.

Yes, people used to work their whole life for a company and retire. Though sometimes it worked out well, and sometimes, it didn't.

My mother worked for Readers Digest for many years and retired with an excellent pension. They even offered a golden parachute early retirement plan and she grabbed it. Never lied about her age again! "I'm afraid if I do they'll make me come back to work!!!" The Digest was a very paternalistic company with excellent benefits.
My FIL worked for decades for R&S Strauss and they screwed him royally on his retirement.
My brother retired from GSK with a decent pension.

Me? Every time I left a company or had an option to roll a 401K or SRA into my personal IRA I did so, building it up over the years. Hopefully, in 3 years, there will still be Social Security...I paid in from the time I was 14.
