Elon releases all Tesla patents

1
Elon Musk announced Thursday he had released all of the electric carmaker Tesla's patents, as part of an effort to fight climate change.

In a blog post, the colorful billionaire founder of Tesla promised the company "will not initiate patent lawsuits against anyone who, in good faith, wants to use our technology."

It was a remarkable move in an industry where the smallest idea or seed of invention is carefully guarded to protect its monetary value.

Open access has been a hallmark of Tesla from the beginning. It appears the full open-sourcing happened in 2014 - I'm guessing the investors see that as a feature rather than a bug.

And what is the US government trying to do with China’s illegal technology transfer? Oh yeah, protect American technologies interests.

I have the distinct feeling that Elon Musk is bordering on unAmerican activities. He’s a foreigner ain’t he? Birth Certificate!!!

In all honesty this is rather extraordinary. There are folks on the PriusChat board who bemoan the fact that the charging program that manages a 15 year old Prius’ hybrid battery is still a Toyota trade secret.

Hmmm, I am certainly for more creative commons technology (Open Source, and its many cousins).

I wonder how Elon Musk has the actual right to do this given the huge value these parents have the the shareholders. After all, it is not 'his" company - it is a public company and this is a big change in the overall book value.

Musk seems to act first and think later. Eventually, that catches up to someone.

I'm pretty sure that the plans to open up the patents have been publically known for some time, so I doubt any group of onvestors could credibly claim to have been surprised by this.

Yeah, here's an article from 2015 talking about the open patents.
