White house lawyers

Trump has just hired 17 new lawyers to deal with some of his problems. At what point is he required to pay for his own lawyers? It's my understanding that the White house lawyer, paid by tax money, is there to protect the presidency and not the president. Crimes and illegal actions of rich people are supposed to be privately paid (probably from excess parade funds).

Good question, my understanding is also that WH lawyers are for the presidency, however federal lawyers are defending him against the DC and MD lawsuit over his Trump International Hotel in DC. Actually it's a good question for an NPR program "All the President's Lawyers" from KCRW. They encourage questions.
