I have one myself. Easier than guitar. And louder.

GASP!! How did you know? If I was in practice on my pennywhistles (which I'm not!) I would love to play that stuff! I used to play saxophone but after many years of not playing, it was easier to get started back on the pennywhistle. I dabbled with it for a bit and went to some Irish/folk/dulcimer festivals, but haven't done it in quite a while. I assume that's a tenor banjo in those clips? I intend to do American folk and bluegrass with the banjo!

Whew, for a second there I thought you were going to make some homophobic, classist joke about the people of Appalachia.

The banjo is such a beautiful instrument. Dixieland, old time, Bluegrass, and Celtic. All wonderful on the banjo. I invite you to consider learning clawhammer style of picking.

New Orleans with all of it's problems has their heads on straight about music. In NOLA banjo players have groupies, of course so do tuba players.

Nice! And I love Irish music too. I play flute. I have some pennywhistles, but oddly I've never taken to them.

My daughter and I generally rate how good a song is by whether it has a banjo or not! Eris, you are lucky to play the flute, you can just jump right into Irish music! There aren't many saxophones in a session but the pennywhistle translates very well from the sax. Banjo is going to be really challenging for me because I'm mostly a wind instrument person but it's more comfortable to finger than the ukulele, I must say, my fingers always kill after trying to play that. I have, and love, the mountain dulcimer too!

LOL! we used to watch that all the time when I was a kid haha. Also, off topic, I'm distantly related to Sheb Wooley (sometimes showed up as "Ben Colder" on Hee Haw) who also wrote "One Eyed One Horned Flying Purple People Eater"; I think he was my granddad's cousin or something like that. BANJOS!!

This is a spoken poem with banjo accompaniment. Lots of different tones showing how versatile the banjo is. Play starts at 2:29
