Apple today announced plans to build a new campus in North Austin, representing a $1 billion investment. It will also add thousands of new jobs across the United States by 2023, with new offices set up in Seattle, San Diego, and Culver City.
Apple also announced plans to expand its presence in Pittsburgh, New York, and Colorado.
Apple says it added 6,000 US jobs in 2018 alone and employs 90,000 across all 50 states (most are retail employees).
Apple will create 20,000 jobs in the United States by 2023 with a significant swelling in Austin thanks to the new campus. Today, Apple currently employs 6,200 workers in Austin.
The Austin campus will be located within a mile of Apple’s existing Austin facilities, and will initially hold 5,000 employees with capacity to grow to 15,000 over time.
The new campus will of course be powered by 100 percent renewable energy, and will feature 50 acres of preserved open space. The campus will support engineering, R&D, operating, finance, sales and customer support.
In a statement, Apple CEO Tim Cook said Apple is ‘proud to bring new opportunity to cities across the United States and to significantly deepen our quarter-century partnership with the city and people of Austin’.
Design plans and timelines for the Austin campus are yet to be announced. Apple’s most recent major new campus, Apple Park, was started in 2011 and originally scheduled to be completed in 2015. However, various delays meant employees only began moving in late 2017.

Apple is just adding more congestion to those metropolitan areas. Seattle already has Microsoft and Amazon; Culver City (11 miles west of LA) is basically LA with 24 hour traffic; San Diego and Austin. Y'all in Texas might be happy about it but I keep thinking how unaffordable the west coast areas are already plus the extra traffic. People need jobs and I'd rather Apple puts them here rather than China. Happily I don't live in those areas.

Yeah... I heard this announced on the radio yesterday and immediately felt sorry for AndyH. The influx of even more tattooed, latte drinking millennials clogging up traffic in his streets. I just wouldn’t be able to handle it.
Enough musicians escaping Austin are already coming to my little desert town and buying up homes in Bisbee...

We thought hard about buying a place in Bisbee. It was the mid 80s. We lived in Tucson and drove a 73 VW poptop camper. We would have fit in at the time. Prolly not so much now.
I loved Bisbee. Wilcox not so much.

Hate to break it to you, the gentrification of Austin started about 10 years ago. Austin has doubled its population since the last census. The only upside is that when I go to cash out, my house will more than pay for the acreage in BFE Texas.

BFE = Bum Freaking Egypt.
Or, roughly 100 or so miles from anything like Austin.

Bastrop? Maybe more like Eagle Pass? Lukenbach? But that's within 100 miles and I think Waylon, Willie and the boys have left.

Interesting expressions you Texans employ. I guess the Egyptians don’t mind?

Never heard one complain.
It’s generally somewhere fairly out of the way and inconvenient to get to. The perfect spot for a gun range and free from light and people pollution. We generally say it’s the type of place you can safely shoot off your back porch.

No just Texans, I've heard it used in CA. Commonly heard when someone was late to a meeting and complained they had to park in BFE. Or that they couldn't call in because the were in BFE without a cell signal.

LOL No worries, Bisbee. I used to spend a lot of time on I35 between SAT and DFW when I was doing trade shows and the stretch through Austin was the worst. Fifteen years ago it took 30 minutes to get to S Austin and another 40 to get through it. The roads improve just enough to maintain the proper levels of road rage regardless of which company moves in.

I realized that BFE is what in the West Coast is often replaced with BFN (n- being “nowhere”). Flexing my google-fu, I realized the Christian reference in the original BFE in another phrase of the same meaning which some Americans employ, “East Jesus Nowhere.”

This is frustrating to me for a different reason.
I've talked to my wife repeatedly over the years about moving to Austin. When we first discussed it, I could have easily gotten a really nice job at a specific tech company there making the same or more than I was, but we could have gotten a MUCH nicer house for less money than our home in PA. Our living expenses would have been considerably lower, the weather would be way better, and Austin would have been very close. Literally everything about it was perfect. "I don't want to move so far away". SMDH.
Similar houses to what we were looking at then are now double the price it was then.

Nah. The Greyhound bus used to pass through there...beautiful PA hills and countryside all around one of the ugliest towns I've ever seen.
