Thanks to the admins and moderators (TM) who have been fighting off this latest invasion of foreign spam apparently setting off a DDOS on this web-site.

What can they POSSIBLY hope to sell here by their actions? I have no clue!

It could be more about disrupting our content than actually selling. Just saying. But why would be my question.

I don't know if those spam threads were Chinese or Korean--or something else, but I have NO idea why we would be targeted for a DDOS.
I could come up with a slew of conspiracy theories, but Occam's Razor tells me that it was simply a web site they found with some vulnerability allowing them to flood us with sales pitches.

So how do other forums keep these types out?

I don't have much expertise, but I seem to remember a dual strategy:
1) Block ALL attempts at access from Eastern Europe, Russia, China, etc. Any IP address from there...blocked.
2) Nobody gets membership without a valid email and response that indicates they are human.

I was a mod on pool forum that was a HUGE target for spammers and scammers: Pools means home ownership, which means resources, which means they are targets. The owner, as much of an asshole as he was, was really religious about keeping the spammers and scammers away.

I usually get them while having my first cup of coffee. I left them this morning because I wanted to let an admin see them. Hopefully it was Inquisitor who cleaned things up, just to make sure he knows what going on. I'm not a web guru, just a content moderator.

Quiz and I discussed it again this morning. Email authentication is on, just enabled a different spam bot verification step. We'll see if it helps- if not we will install a new anti spam plugin and see how that does.

It was all Korean characters being displayed but I didn’t google check it to see if they actually made sense as in a real sentence written in Korean. It seemed like gibberish at first glance with the numbers and romanized letters thrown in for no apparent reason.

Unless someone else got it first it looks like Shinzens fix is working.

Well, we went from 10 registrations two days ago to just a few yesterday. We'll see. There was one registered this morning from down south of us that I nuked, but it hadn't posted anything other than profile link spam.

Those are sleepers, we should sweep out zero post reg's every so often. I had been doing it for a while, but you seem to enjoy it :)

I saw mention of it on Facebook, but missed it all here. Good job on the conflagration.
