Turkey Day NOT OK?

My local NPR station was reading out reader comments about recent stories. There were several complaining about a story about Thanksgiving in which the corresponsent said “Happy Turkey Day!” Several vegans complained saying it was offensive to them because it presupposes that everyone eats meat on Thanksgiving. What do you think? Should “Turkey Day” be retired to the dustbin of inappropriate language?

Too bad, the whiners can think happy thoughts about the turkey that was pardoned.

Pardoned by Trump? Not a happy thought even for a Turkey.

Vegan is a choice. If you make a conscious decision that fundamentally alters the communal traditional of breaking bread and eating turkey around the third week of November, they could fill an ocean with all the fucks I don’t give about your “offense” of colloquium that has no ill intent.

:clap2: While I long for the Star Trek days where a lookalike nutritious non-animal turkey shows up at the push of a replicator button, I'm giggling at 321's assessment. Add my nonfucks to the pile. Although the use of the phrase Turkey Day bothers me because I was actually born on Thanksgiving.

Jesus, here comes an old man reminiscence story.....it was some time in the early 90s when I was in college. I duly went to mom's for Thanksgiving and then headed home to my own neighborhood. For those Chicagoans who are keeping score I lived a block away from the Heartland cafe, which happened to be open that night so I went in for a drink or six. The lady next to me at the bar asked me how my day was going and what did I do which I thought was odd because it was Thanksgiving but young Klown answered honestly that I had been to mom's for Thanksgiving. She seemed to soak in every detail. Then she asked if we had turkey and I was like "of course!" and then she replied "Well, I've been a vegetarian for ten years!" and launched into a vegetarian diatribe which seemed to have no end. It was at that point that I realized I wasn't getting lucky.

It's Thanksgiving, unofficially Turkey Day and vegans can call it whatever they want. Some people don't like turkey and have ham or duck or lamb .... even tofu. Great story KK. Have a happy one!

Political correctness has been used many different ways.

Vegetarians proselytize to a point, vegans are far worse about it. How do you know someone is a vegan? Don't worry, they'll tell you.

And add me to the fucks not given pile about the name. I do try to be sensitive, but not doing it for this one.

It's like the snowflakes who claim they can't say "Merry Christmas!" anymore.
Bullshit! "Happy Holidays!" is more inclusive, including Thanksgiving, Chanukkah (which drives spell-checkers to drink!), Christmas, Kwanzaa, and New Year's.
I wish people a Merry Christmas EVERY year, and some wish me a Happy Hanukkah (Ha!Ha!--spelling it differently again!) in return.

Just tell your vegan friends they have a Happy Turkey Day by not a turkey--I'm sure turkeys are VERY happy not to be dinner.
Instead they can even avoid eating "Peas" and "Carrots"! :roflmao:

Tofurkey offends everyone.

It's closer to a building material than a food.
Whiny Vegans can go stuff a Tofurkey.

Tofu isn't too bad if it is completely encased in thick strips of thick bacon grilled and served as a side dish with barbecued pork ribs. Almost as good as duck cracklings.

No constitutional protections against being offended. Some people consider offending people being part of pursuit of happiness. Trump got elected on it.

I like tofu, but it ain't turkey, it's tofu. You saute and stir-fry it, you put it in miso soup, but you don't make turkey out of it.

We just had turkey with 2 kinds of stuffing, vinaigrette Brussels sprouts, buttermilk cornbread, cranberry jelly, and giblet gravy.
Next it's coffee and Mom's Apple Pie and Dad's Cheesecake for dessert!

To be fair to Tofurky, it may have tofu in it, but it's mostly seitan, not tofu.

There's nothing wrong with saying "happy Turkey Day," and there's nothing wrong with pointing out that not everyone eats turkey of Thanksgiving. It's the "I'm offended" part that's problematic.
