Just a little thing for the Windoze 10 users. Buggy Updates

I came across this little tidbit at Slashdot. I know there are those amongst that are still running Windoze machines. I know many have no choice in the matter of what OS you are using. So be forewarned about this problem.
When it was discovered earlier this month that the 1809 build of Windows 10 was deleting user files just because, Microsoft halted the update until the problem was fixed. Shame, then, that another not-as-bad-but-still-bad file overwriting bug has now reared its head. in 1809, overwriting files by extracting from an archive using File Explorer doesn't result in an overwrite prompt dialogue and also doesn't replace any files at all; it just fails silently. There are also some reports that it did overwrite items, but did so silently without asking.

Ars Technica speculates that there's a larger program with Microsoft's testing process:
[M]any of the preview builds had a bug wherein deleting a directory that was synced to OneDrive crashed the machine. Not only was this bug integrated into the Windows code, it was allowed to ship to end users. This tells us some fundamental things about how Windows is being developed. Either tests do not exist at all for this code (and I've been told that yes, it's permitted to integrate code without tests, though I would hope this isn't the norm), or test failures are being regarded as acceptable, non-blocking issues, and developers are being allowed to integrate code that they know doesn't work properly...

Microsoft's new development process has, proportionately, a greater amount of time spent writing new features, and a reduced amount of time stabilizing and fixing those features. That would be fine if the quality of the features were higher to start with, with the testing infrastructure to support it and higher standards before new code was integrated. But the experience with Windows 10 thus far is that Microsoft hasn't developed the processes and systems needed to sustain this new approach.

I’m not tying to start a flame war on which computer system is best. I just thought this was good information for those that don’t hang out on the computer nerd sites.

It happened to me. My old laptop crashed and burned a few weeks ago and I bought a new one. Before I started surfing the web with the new laptop, I got all the updates including the one for October 2018. About 48 hours later I started having problems with programs, I finally had to reset it before the 10/2018 update and it works fine. It reminded me of an old guy who used to have a radio show on computers, people would call in with computer problems. He always said that he waited awhile before downloading windows updates to hear if there were any problems, unintended consequences.

I've always thought storing critical data on the Internet was INSANE! I don't care WHAT guarantees they give us about The Cloud, OneDrive, or gMail--if you trust them you're asking for trouble.
Years ago, when Roche-Genentec switched its email system to gMail, I thought they were out of their minds, and still do. The data protection rules for clinical trials make the Hipaa regs look like a friendly suggestion.
Microsoft's testing protocols have been lacking for over 30 years. Remember how they introduced Windows 3.1 and it was incompatible with DOS 6.0, their latest release at the time? It wasn't until 6.1 or 6.2 that it worked!

Pretty much ever other release of Windows is a loser: Vista, Millennium, Win 8

I don't intentionally put stuff in the Cloud, buying stuff online with Amazon means some of my info is up there since Amazon owns most of the Cloud. I have a problem with putting medical records up there since we know financial records are so secure and would never be hacked. :sarcasm: DOD and others are looking at placing large amounts of data there, it seems scary.

Might as well just GIVE it to Russia and China because they'll access it as soon as it's there.
(no, I'm not saying we SHOULD do it--I'm saying it's irresponsibly stupid!)
