This could be as specific or broad as you like.
If you are a prepper, what are you preparing for? What are you worried about? What do you expect? Have you ever made life changing decisions as a result of your beliefs?
If you're not into prepping, then why not?
Re: What do you prep for?
2I prep for whenever the supply chain runs out and supermarkets empty. Once they empty, SHTF will start 3 days later after people start eating ketchup and mustard for dinner. I prep by stocking up food, hand tools, and a few guns with plenty of ammo.

4Nah. Teach a man to fish and he'll sit in a boat all day long drinking beer, then stop at the grocery store on the way home.Swimmer wrote: Fri Oct 19, 2018 9:22 pmPerfect description. How come nobody preps by stocking in rum, bourbon, tequila, vodka, and an ice machine???

6As a theoretical exercise, the proverbial “zombie apocalypse”. No, that’s not really a joke. The former head of the CDC under Obama, at the height of the zombie fad in pop culture, started a tongue-in-cheek zombie apocalypse preparedness campaign to get people to take emergency preparedness steps. It was meant to be a fun, non-threatening way to get people interested in basic prepping and it took off. The CDC zombie webpage is still there:
https://www.cdc.gov/phpr/zombie/index.h ... ombies.htm
There is no such thing as zombies, of course, but think about what a fictional one involves: plague, social breakdown, economic and political collapse. A smorgasbord of SHTF dishes served up on a single platter. That is why the aforementioned CDC Director was quoted as saying that “if you prepare for the zombie apocalypse you prepare for them all”.
I also prepare for specific, real, potential disasters like earthquake (a big one here at the Cascadia Subduction Zone) but the zombie thought exercise is my favorite and most fun. (I just hope they are the slow kind and not the running kind. I hate those)

I guess. But if my prepping space is limited, I'm not wasting it on anything below 30%!

Re: What do you prep for?
12I mostly prep for the small to medium size disasters. Power outages, wind storms, and such. Having had an F5 tornado go within one mile of my house (Super occurance of tornadoes, April 3 1974) I recognize their power. We had the doors and windows open to equalize pressure. At one mile away the wind was strong enough to lift heavy framed pictures off the wall.
My state has had 2 major ice storms in recent years. I was lucky, but many others had electricity out for two weeks.
As far as BIG disasters, two that concern me are the New Madrid fault, and a natural or terrorist EMP. I really don't think we are going to have all out nuclear war or be hit by an asteroid.
As for disasters on a personal level, I have already been the target of conservative nutso's perpetrating a hate crime against me. As I see the growing levels of Nazi, NeoConfederate, Ku Klux Klan, Christian Identity, white supremacists, and other such groups motivated by hate and conservatism-- well let's just say I prep so if they come after me again, I will be ready.

Re: What do you prep for?
13And yet Kentucky keeps electing statewide officials that do NOTHING for the state.
Did Mitch or Rand seriously oppose and obstruct the shit-stain's tariffs that are causing Europe and China to surgically target the Bourbon industry? Nope.
Have they done anything for the coal miners?
I forgot: did the reactionary governor also throw off the necessary benefits of the ACA hurting health care there?
What they ALL do (and Mitch is a champ at it--better than the shit-stain) is create destructive policies that benefit their corporate sponsors, then cut benefits to pay for them...and blame Democrats for not being "bi-partisan".
So "keep your powder dry". And remember the new nazi code-words "Identitarian" and "The Great Replacement". The first means White supremacy racism, the latter the "browning" of population.

Re: What do you prep for?
14I prep for being fired (directly or systematically) from a job that pays me just enough to keep the bare basics i need to tread water indefinitely and thus keep coming into work making the company millions in profit. I prepare for complete homelessness and food insecurity. I say complete because ive never really had a home, i merely work daily to rent a roof and walls at 50% of the average national income.
Steps ive taken for this include a semi-motorized mode of transportation (ebike) a camper van with 250w of solar including battery powered fridge/freezer, a pistol, small game rifle, and decent camping/survival gear. The ability to filter 2-3 years worth of water and bulk food stuffs such as red and black beans, rice, corn meal, etc good for about a year in and of itself. 2 years of otc drugs (ibu, antiseptics, etc).

Re: What do you prep for?
15Except for keeping a good supply of ammo (about 2500 rounds, .233 and 9mmm) I don't prep. I should When Hurricane Ike hit Houston a few years ago I was without power for 6 weeks and had to use a generator. We were prepped for hurricane survival then, and it really helped. Today I'd be SOL if a major hurricane hit the area. I really need to set aside some supplies.

I always thought to myself if you worry about the big events you pretty much cover your bases for smaller localized events too.
If you are worried about being the victim of violence (first I'm very sorry to hear that, no one should ever have to have that fear) but I'm glad you are proactively addressing it and have the means to defend yourself. If you have the time/resources look into taking defensive pistol courses that will give you more training and confidence.
Re: What do you prep for?
18Speaking of tornados.... prepping with supplies is great but try going for 1 month or more without electricity. Prepping your mind and body is also very important. Perhaps moreso. Not just in a camping situation either. Do it at your home as if your neighborhood was leveled. Its a different experience for sure.
I found in big natural disasters some of the greatest humanity has to offer. The sense of community and shared loss changes you.

Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on or one day we will spend our sunset years telling our children what it was once like in the United States where men were free.

24It is something that I am concerned about. IMHO, it is one of the Big disasters that I think is very possible and somewhat likely. Either North Korea, some ISIL/Daesh faction, or some homegrown group. It would be devastating for our country.koolaidblue wrote: Sat Oct 20, 2018 6:24 pmI'm glad others take the risk of EMP seriously as well.Hiker wrote: Sat Oct 20, 2018 10:21 am

Yes, I have taken several defensive pistol classes, including a recent one of gun retention and close quarter shooting. I've done IDPA and several other pistol competitions. I have several Sigs and M&P 2.0 pistols, along with several S&W and Colt revolvers. I am also trained on the 2 AR's that I have, and the VersaMax Competition/Tactical 12 guage that I have.koolaidblue wrote: Sat Oct 20, 2018 6:24 pm....but I'm glad you are proactively addressing it and have the means to defend yourself. An important skill that I have is de-escalation techniques, using words and body actions to de-escalate a potentially violent situation. I learned this from psychologists and the Kentucky State Police. A fight that I am NOT in is a fight won! But if I do have to use physical force, I am well trained in first aid, so if I can to so safely, I will treat my attackers wounds till help arrives.
I also have 15 years worth of martial arts training, internal and external Chinese ShaoLin kungfu. So I can break a board, or a head. Not bad for someone that is grandma aged!
