Four months later, not only is the tent city still operating, it has exploded in size: it now houses about 1,500 children, up from about 330 in June. The shelter’s expansion is still due in part to the Trump administration, specifically a new requirement that the FBI perform a fingerprint background check on adults who want to sponsor an unaccompanied child.

With midterm elections just a few weeks away, and with Hispanic voters still largely an untapped resource, Democrats are trying to highlight the GOP’s ties to the swelling shelter in the West Texas desert. On Monday, U.S. Reps. Joaquin Castro, D-San Antonio, and Joe Kennedy III, D-Massachusetts, toured the site operated by BCFS Health and Human Services, a San Antonio-based nonprofit.

On a conference call with reporters, Castro called the Trump administration’s role in the situation “morally bankrupt,” and Kennedy labeled it “inhumane.”

We could have saved millions of dollars if DHS expanded the number of immigration judges and staff, kept families together and did expedited hearings. This family separation process is costlier and without additional hearing staff just delays it. Housing and providing security is costly plus all the fingerprinting and background checks. Heard an interview with a group of experts and former government officials who visited the shelters in TX and in a few other states. They said that the children seemed well cared for but there is no schooling and during the hot part of the summer the children were restricted to the tents. Even if they were taught English that would help, but they are still going to be behind in their schooling wherever they end up.
