Re: "Are You a Preppie?"

All this Preppie stuff reminds me how utterly uncool I was in High School and College.

We used to call these folks "The Beautiful Ones" because they all went to each others parties in very large houses and puked all over the front lawn - cops were never called.

These people sucked up all the social oxygen in the age group. I, of course, compounded my lack-of-cool by majoring in Mathematics (which marks one as uncool for life.)

And there was one more odd thing about these folks: they were "others" in almost every way one can imagine. In Southern Virginia where I grew up, all young men were required to work on cars, and all complied. Every teenage boy (and a compelling number of girls, given it was the early '70s) had a huge tool box, car jacks, Chilton manuals and a winch to lift engines. (Even Math majors :-)

But not the "Beautiful Ones" - their parents bought them nice cars with perfect paint and high horsepower. Not one of these guys owned a toolbox. When the inevitable happened and their cars broke down by the side of the road, some buy named 'Bubba' would have to stop and help them out.

Brett K and his boys had kegs? My crowd was lucky if we got a six pack of PBR once a month.

Do I feel sorry that I missed being 'cool'? Not since I turned 25. I could see how these folks keep talking about their High School years as "the best years of my life". And that about sums it up. Very few of them really ascended to even meet the income level of their parents. Brett K appears to be a 'success', but he has no personal wealth. His credit cards were at max. He may have had a fancy job in the White House, but it probably came with a "GS" number. (Not to disparage Government workers at all. But it does not really match the 'Masters of the Universe' image, now does it.)

Now, for a refreshing change, go look at the background of Justice Sonia Sotomayor and you can see someone who earned every step of her path to the Supreme Court. Justice Sotomayor was raised in the projects in the Bronx and by her own admission has never been 'cool' for even a brief moment in her accomplished life.

I went to a nerd state school, where national fraternities and sororities were banned and none would receive whatever certification they need from the university. (That's no longer true --now there are frats there). I didn't experience these "Chauncey Uppercrust" assholes till I visited friends at another university, ten years before Bratt went off to Yale.

When Graham said Bratt was going through "hell" I had to laugh! Dr. Ford was forced out of her home, had her email hacked, has been mocked by no less than the President of the United States, and neither of them have faced what millions of Americans face everyday as THEIR normal, whether they are poor, live in ghettos, or, worse, have relatives who are "illegals" and are separated from them.

Nor what these poor children who keep being moved and are locked in tent city prisons with no schooling, grossly inadequate hygiene and health care, plus the sheer terror of being separated from their families because little shit Steve Miller gets orgasms thinking about their suffering--and he's TRUSTED by the shit stain!
