Re: Stay dry, East Coasters (Florence)

I just don't damn well feel like dealing with a hurricane right now.

Fortunately, I pulled my boat and put her on her trailer earlier this season. This is the first time in many years I don't have to worry about a boat in the water during Hurricane season. Of course my friends with boats expect help...

Then there's the question of what to do with my MIL and step-FIL who live next door. She is wheelchair bound due to MS and he has pretty severe dementia. This will be fun...

Stay dry, stay safe. Mason, does your in-laws medical insurance cover a short stay in a nursing facility during a disaster? Both my parents died suddenly when I was in my 30s, thankfully I never had to care for them when they were very old. I agree with eelj, you're very smart you'll work out a plan.

Well said. Stay safe from the "used to be in drought but now is in flash flood" wind generation capitol of the country.

Florence will be growing larger once she hits the warmer than normal water ahead of her.

Cat 5 by tomorrow...
A stunning burst of rapid intensification has created one of the biggest meteorological threats to the East Coast in recorded history.
"None of the guidance suggest that Florence has peaked in intensity, and this is supported by a continuation of a low-shear environment, and even warmer waters over he next 36 hours. Thus, the intensity forecast is raised from the previous one, bringing Florence close to Category 5 strength tomorrow," NHS said.

Thanks all. It looks like NC and SC are going to get the brunt of it.

On a plus note, we did use the hurricane warning to finally get my FIL into a memory care assisted living. It's a trial run but I think he will like it and forget that he lived next door.

Due to typical greedy and short-sighted Rethuglicanism, funded by neo-Fascist Art Pope, the entire North Carolina shore line is likely to be destroyed, displacing millions of people and costing billions, probably tens of billions of dollars. They outlawed Science in 2012. This was once a moderate liberal/conservative state--and it STILL can elect Dems statewide like the current governor.

I have a brother and nephew and many friends in the central Piedmont region (that's inland in the center of the state) and the rains there have ALREADY soaked and softened the ground enough that many trees are in danger of going over. It's a disaster that will rival if not easily surpass last year's hurricanes, Katrina, and SuperStorm Sandy.

My wishes and thoughts go out to those that are going to be affected by Florence. Unfortunately after seeing what happened in Puerto Rico and Agent Orange's recent response, I don't have much hope he has learned anything about helping people in a disaster.

Hurricane Center now say it will veer south and west going trough South Carolina and Georgia, but still affecting North Carolina and Virginia. I bet Agent Orange will view the damage while on Air force One on his way to Mar-a-lago for some relaxing golf.

The predicted stall just off the coast is bad news. It means storm surge sticks around while 24+ hours of rainfall backs up onto it (effectively, there is no where for the runoff to go since the ocean is in the way). The stall will make this bad, even if the storm degrades to a Cat 2-3.

Please encourage anyone you may know staying near the coast or waterways to get out. Stuff is replaceable, lives are not. A great resource is the Weather Underground site (Cat 6) that has regular updates as well as on-going discussion. https://www.wunderground.com/cat6

Beautiful and horrifying.

He doesn't go to Mar-a-lago till it gets cold. Instead he goes to Bedminster, here in NJ to play golf. Wherever he goes, his neighbors hate him!

Coasts could get 40" of rain...and there are 83' waves already, BEFORE the surges! I wonder if it will suck away the ocean from Bermuda and the northern Bahamian islands the way last year's 'cane did from Exuma? It literally sucked the sea floor dry, just like the story of Moses "parting" the Red Sea. Then it came roaring back, just like the Biblical story.

How the Waffle House is used to determine a hurricane's fury

I lived for two years in the South. Love me some Waffle House.
When the waitress with the missing tooth forgets to call you “Hon’” or “Sug’” you know you’re in trouble.
LOL I've never been to a Waffle House, looks like there are some in AZ so next time I'm there I'll have to try one. I like the older waitresses, last time I was in LV at a breakfast house the food was lousy but the staff mostly older waitresses were five star.

Interesting map of their locations.
