Just a brief report here. A new person joined me at the range today for some firearms instruction. He showed a fantastic learning attitude and soaked up everything. He has a background in meditation, and it was very interesting to hear how much of the focus, breathing, etc. sounded exactly like what he knew from his meditation experience.

He brought his own rifle to sight in; frustratingly, we couldn't quite get it dialed in, even though we were on paper at 50 yards. For some reason, we had trouble replicating shots and forming groups. Better luck was had with a scoped .308 I had brought. After a few shots he was hitting the gong at 200 yards at will. Note that he had never shot a firearm before.

He also shot out the center of the pistol target which was set up at 7 yards. He got to shoot semi-auto action in .22lr and 9mm, and a revolver in .38 Special. Basically, he rocked.

Awesome day.

That's cool. Im glad to hear your friend's meditation training quickly translated to breathing and concentrating on the target. I too treat range time kinda like zen archery. (When I'm on. Too easily it becomes making noise if I don't stay conscious.)

Target awareness quickly becomes body awareness if I get into the zone.

What is the firearm he brought which had sighting issues?

Awesome. What was the rifle he brought? Scoped?

So neat, the discovery about meditation and its similarity to shooting techniques. Happens in archery for me as well.

I think it was a Benelli MR1, with a UTG scope on removable mounts. We got it generally sighted and was on and around the target, but could not duplicate shots or tighten the pattern. Checked the scope and it seemed solid. Targets were 50 yards. One issue was that we didn't have a proper sighting scope and were relying on binoculars, making it hard to verify the hits. Frustrating.

You should have seen the look on his face when he hit the steel gong at 200 yards. Priceless. That was the Ruger American Rifle in .308 I wrote about a while back.

Word, CD. Taking new folk to the range is the best.

That's an expensive rifle.
