Re: another school shooting this time in Texas
3A TV station is saying 8 are dead.
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/18/us/s ... texas.htmlMultiple people were killed, and others were injured, in a shooting on Friday morning at Santa Fe High School in Santa Fe, Tex., according to law enforcement officials. A suspect was in custody.
At least three people were killed, according to Mark Henry, the Galveston County judge, the county’s top elected official.
The injured included at least one police officer, whose condition is unknown, Ed Gonzalez, the Harris County sheriff, said on Twitter. In addition to the suspect in custody, one person has been detained, he said.
The gunman opened fire inside the school at about 7:45 a.m., around the time school was about to start for the day, according to Joe Giusti, a Galveston County commissioner. He said the injured officer worked for the Santa Fe school district as a school resource officer. The gunman was uninjured, he said.
Raul Reyes, a spokesman for the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, said at least one patient had been taken to the hospital with another en route by helicopter as of midmorning.
The Santa Fe Independent School District said that law enforcement agencies were securing the building and that students were being transported to the nearby Alamo Gym, at 13306 Highway 6, where parents could meet them. Santa Fe is 20 miles west of Galveston, in Galveston County.
Leila Butler, a sophomore at the school, told ABC13, a local affiliate, that fire alarms at the school went off at about 7:45 a.m.
Another student told the station that a gunman entered her art class with what looked like a shotgun and began shooting at students. She said she saw a student get hit in the leg before she and others started running.
The Santa Fe Police Department, Harris County Sheriff’s Office, Galveston County Sheriff and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives all said they were assisting in the response.
“Large police presence, please avoid the area,” Sheriff Gonzalez said on Twitter.
President Trump commented on the shooting in a tweet on Friday.
“Early reports not looking good,” he said. “God bless all!”

8Don't know anything about this shooter, where he got the guns or the motivation. Yesterdays shooting in Dixon, IL seems to be a case of bullying, probably true in many other school shooting cases.

10I'd like to know how these kids are getting guns like this. I'm all for teaching kids about guns and shooting, but they shouldn't have independent access to the guns until they are adults, and the more of these events that happen, the more sympathetic I am to raising the age to own guns to 21.

13now we get this POS showing up at the shooting.
It is more than an embarrassment. It is pure Trump Crap.
https://www.rawstory.com/2018/05/watch- ... oting-gun/Trump supporter earned the rebuke of a fellow Second Amendment fan when he brought his open-carry pistol and an American flag to the scene of a school shooting in Santa Fe, Texas that resulted in the reported deaths of multiple students.
When asked what his first thought was upon hearing about the active shooter at Santa Fe High School, the unnamed Trump supporter said he first thought he needed to “get to the school,” and then the phrase “make America great again.”
He told a reporter from Houston’s KHOU that he was there “offering support,” and that a “god bless y’all will go a long way right now.”
As he walked away, the camera panned to the man’s hip to show that he had a pistol holstered on his belt — a fact that enraged another resident interviewed by the news station.
“This idiot is walking down the street with a damn pistol on his side where we just had kids get shot,” the other man said. “I’m a gun rights person, I have guns. But this idiot is walking down here and saying that he needs to make America great again. That’s not what America needs.”
“We don’t need this crap,” the man continued.

15Bullying IS a root cause and should be addressed as such.highdesert wrote: Fri May 18, 2018 12:14 pm Don't know anything about this shooter, where he got the guns or the motivation. Sometimes the bullying has to do with difference: race, homophobia, sexism, and (by extension in many cases), toxic notions about manhood and masculinity.
I would like to see THOSE addressed as root causes by this group.

16I haven't seen anything yet about the gun. Pipe- and pressure-cooker bombs are a new twist to the 'revenge at school' meme.
Kids have a lot more reasons to be angry and hopeless these days than us 50-somethings. Most will never have a boat or vacations, or a 20 or 30 year career with the same company, or retirement, or maybe social security. With climate change, about 40 years of soil left in the middle of the country, and not recovering from the 2008 financial meltdown in the background, there's plenty of ground for anger to spread like kudzu. And with schools becoming more like prisons? I expect to see a lot more of these before we're done...if we ever get 'done'. Welcome to yet another new normal.

Investigators are searching a trailer where it is believed the IEDs found at the Texas High School were assembled, according to a law enforcement source, who says a pressure cooker has been found.

17Gotta say folks, between you and I, every shooting I see, given the flow of conversation between peoole and the history of the SCOTUS tripping over itself, I dont feel.so good about our odds. The eventuality, to me, is bleak for gun ownership and the interpretation of the purpose of the 2a. I can discuss the numbers and trends and causes like the most rational robot on the earth, and no one cares. And I fear the SCOTUS won't either.
I wish I had more faith. But I don't. Ill keep truckin along as I do. Insistant and open but I just don't see it goin my way. For however long it takes.
The rich whill buy their way into companies, the feel good groups will continue to co-opt the discussion. I'm even of the mind that big govt is encouraging this all to get overwhelming support to redefine the 2a and neuter our rights.
Here's one for fighten along.

The attacker was armed with an AR-15-style rifle, a pistol, a shotgun and pipe bombs, the official said.
They don't know if any pipe bombs went off? Uh-huh. Seriously?"Officers inside encountered a bloody mess in the school," the source said, adding, "Evidently this guy threw pipe bombs all in there. We don't know if any of them went off."

But yes you're right. In so many ways the quality of society is deteriorating.
And it wouldn't be so bad if access to aid and care were greater but we can't even do that right.
Were leaving the youth with less options and less care and less of an ability to think their way through to a solution.
We will have a very angry unthinjing populace. I dunno where that will lead... but its scary

I'm not switching sides just pointing out the trend as I see it.
Its a damn shame but what they are doing is working, what we as a whome are doing is not. Not that we are even doing it wrong, it just isn't working.
Re: another school shooting this time in Texas
22Schools are actually much safer now then they were in the 90s. Unfortunately perception is reality for most people and the news cycle now drives perception. Bullying is way down, shootings are less (just more per instance), hazing is on the down turn, most kids are safer in school then they are at home or going to and from school. Some kids are better fed because of school programs since their parents suck at providing even the basics.
So the "kids these days", "what's wrong with the world now", etc. arguments are just people's perceptions and fears, magnified by a 24/7 news cycle selling death and destruction, for more viewers and increased ad revenue. Marketing works, bleeding sells, politicians use emotion to get elected and gain power. The good old days were actually worse then now. We should all be happy, not more afraid.

Re: another school shooting this time in Texas
25Another horrific, senseless slaughter.
Our RKBA will not survive these shootings. After they are gone, or at least severely restricted, there will still be mass killings, whether they be with firearms or vans or bombs, but folks will think "at least we did something," though that something addressed nothing. I would bet there are many here who like me, held their nose and punched a hole next to the name Clinton on the ballot; maybe we should think about pinching our noses again and joining the NRA. I don't know, is that worse than losing our right to defend ourselves? As a group, gun owners are seen in a very poor light by a significant portion of the U.S. population and no one is doing anything to improve that image, and frankly, our "image" isn't the important thing in this debate anyway. The battle here is not for hearts and minds --we're losing that one-- but for our rights as we know them.
Or should we just give up what some folks (even here) call our toys?
