False alarm at University of Central Florida

UCF PD evacuated the schopl's library after reports of a "gunman/woman in the building." soon after they realized there wasn't any gun man or woman and returned everything to normal. Of course, nobody ever called the cop. They were responding to a Facebook post in a closed group.

Except an officer had an ND as he returned his rifle to its vehicle mount.
As the all-clear was given to students who waited out the library, a shot was heard outside.
UCF Police confirmed the sound was a accidental shot by one of their officers.
“He was putting his gun in his car and it accidentally discharged. We’re not sure if that was an issue the gun or an issue with the rack but we’re going to look into it," said UCF police spokesperson Courtney Gilmartin.
For reference these are sworn LEOs with the same training as municipal/county officers and state level jurisdiction.

On Reddit students with access to the Facebook group said the whole thing started after somebody told a friend she saw a girl praying with a Quran in a stairwell. From there it became the "praying with a Quran and gun in the stairwell!" post.

Sometimes I think we've gone far enough with the "See something, say something" campaigns.

I think there was a problem with the trigger. I bet there's a thumb stuck in it. :roflmao:

For those who like their news a bit less reasonable and fact based Here's a web.archive link to an Occupy Democrats version of the events.
UCF and their campus police should be ashamed of themselves for highlighting the fact that the nonexistent shooter was a “Middle Eastern,” implying that a mass shooting by a Middle Eastern person is inexplicably worse than one committed by anyone else. It is exactly this kind of discriminatory paranoia and suspicion that alienates Muslim-Americans from the rest of society and contributes to division within our already polarized society. The constant fear-mongering by Republican politicians have left the ignorant and the prejudiced terrified of “terrorists” under their beds, distracting us from the real issues facing our country – like institutionalized racism and ethno-nationalist scapegoating. People of every religion, every color, every gender deserve the benefit of the doubt- and deserve to be treated with more respect than this.

So I guess descriptive features of a suspect are irrelevant. And only Republicans use fear to keep the populace in line, because Democrats would never do such a thing like make us scared of assault rifles and categorize situations like this as "Trump's America."
