According to initial internal Pentagon communications obtained by Air Force Times, the commanding officer of a training squadron at the base was shot by an airman.
Bexar County Sheriff's Office spokesman James Keith said the bodies of two men, who remain unidentified, were found in a room on the base near two firearms. It is unclear whether one individual had both guns or each man had a weapon.

It's interesting that the Bexar ("bey-har") County SO is taking the lead.

Medina Annex, a few miles from the main base, was where they trained non-USAF Academy officers when I was in Basic in the early '70s - looks like it's used for Security Police training now. That may be why the base AF & DoD cops aren't primary.

I wondered about why the local LEOs were taking the lead. I thought it would have been the Air Force and FBI since it is federal property.

Apparently the LEO gaggle included locals, FBI, and AF. Last I heard from local radio was that it had been handed over to the AF Office of Special Investigations.

The sergeant was reported to have been a former FBI agent...

SAN ANTONIO — A tech sergeant at Lackland Air Force Base was being escorted to a disciplinary proceeding by a senior non-commissioned officer Friday morning when the tech sergeant opened fire in the commander's office, killing the commander, a source with knowledge of the attack said.
The Annex has a number of units now - from military working dog training, a couple of different tech schools, to an NSA facility.

On base with only service members involved - yeah, I'd expect AFOSI to take the lead (although I'm never surprised if the Bureau claims credit for another agency's work).

FBI agent (enter at GS-10) to AF TSgt (E-6)? That's at least a 30% pay cut. Something was up. When I was in a GS-10 was usually the pecking order equivalent to an O-3 (Captain in Army, AF, and MC, Lieutenant in Navy and CG). Something was going on there.
