Something happened in Salinas, just 30 minutes away from me.

Second, it's nice (Sarcasm) of the police chief to try to tie in the dangerousness of said AR15 by tying in recent terrorist events and other mass shootings.
The last thing to note is that this is California, and we peons do not have access to "hi capacity" magazines, or normal AR15s without bullet buttons or featureless builds. If the goal of California law is to prevent the spread of such dangerous weapons and high capacity magazines, why is law enforcement exempt? This is one of many ongoing cases where law enforcement officials have had their guns & gear stolen. If the state wishes to remain consistent in their belief about reducing the influx of such dangerous things, then law enforcement should also be prohibited -- because look, it could definitely be stolen from them! Or they could lose it. [/end rant]

First, I am sorry to hear that he got an AR15 stolen. It does suck when it happens to any of us. Probably doubly so for law enforcement. Hopefully they can catch the perps who did this.An AR-15 rifle was stolen from the Salinas police chief's car parked in unincorporated Monterey County on Friday.
Chief Kelly McMillin said his department-owned AR-15, mounted in a rifle lock, was taken from his unmarked police car around 1:30 a.m. Friday.
...
The rifle had a larger capacity magazine and some other configurations that would be illegal for a civilian to possess in California, but could be purchased in other states, the chief said.
...
McMillin said there's also a possibility he may have left the vehicle unlocked.
..
The rifle is similar to the one used in recent years by suspects in mass shootings across the country including the San Bernardino attack in December, according to McMillin.
