Interesting only because of the firearms allegedly found, including an "UZI machine pistol." There is no other mention in the article of the teens having an automatic weapon.

Mercer Island police apprehended five young men in the South Luther Burbank parking lot who were found with a bulletproof vest, ammunition and two loaded guns in their vehicle on Wednesday night.
"As is common under these circumstances, the occupants suffered an identity crisis and could not immediately recall their legal names and were unable to spell the aliases they provided," MIPD Services Commander Leslie Burns wrote on the
Mercer Island Police and Emergency Management Facebook page.
Officers discovered a .22 caliber rifle and an AR-15 rifle in the car, and one of the occupants confessed to having a rifle magazine in his back pocket. One by one, the occupants were removed from the vehicle and placed in handcuffs. The officers then determined that the guns were not Airsoft rifles.

Identity crisis!
Wonder what the little boneheads were up to, glad the police prevented it, wonder what attracted police attention in the first place.

The identity crisis riff from the police is a dog whistle for "Latino" in PDs. Latinos come here to make better lives for themselves and end up in the system for mistakes that can often be attributed to cultural differences.

Not even I have a bulletproof vest. This has the hallmark of a gang drive-by in the making.

I read it as just plain garden variety bogus names. Are you sure that "dog whistle" isn't just you breaking wind?

What are the cultural differences that you refer to?

I know the AR-15 platform can have different calibers depending on the upper but isn't the default (5.56/.223) a .22 caliber rifle? That sentence seems to be more for provoking fear than informing.

I will defer to common use. A 22 is not a 223

The one on the left makes a bigger owie.

I know that but the actual caliber (the internal diameter of the barrel) is the same is it not? The difference would be in the chamber where one is meant for bigger booms to make the heavier projectile go faster (more Kinetic energy).
My comment was more directed at the use of the Generic .22 rifle and specific AR-15. Though I guess it could be considered a small amount of progress that they didn't list it as an "AR-15 assault weapon".

Considerable improvement, I'd say.

Here are some previous threads in which I have alluded to cultural differences. Links:

Here is a good example from not too long ago. A white girl is killed in a car accident, and no one takes into account the victimization of Eswin Mejia by our lousy immigration system as a mitigating circumstance. Link:

AR 15 same as a .22 is like saying a .380 is the same as a .357 magnum.

I was hoping you'd paraphrase.

I think I'm being thick because I am not seeing the equivalency, or it may be that a misunderstanding based on cultural differences is not how I would characterize what is going on in some of these threads or in the OP; process malfunction/inept bureaucracy, maybe; or cultural bias/racism in another; something else still going on in another. Or maybe I just didn't hear the dogwhistle and figured this was just a few knucklehead kids caught on the eve of doing something stupid and trying to weasel out of accountability, and nothing more.
It's late in my day and I think I'll just accept that I'm not getting something and leave it at that.

I'm wondering what they were driving. Mercer Island is the Land of Beemers and Saabs where a three year old Lexus is down-market.
