How stupid can you be at one time? You leave a loaded gun on the truck floor and you don't have your kid in a car seat. Maybe she was drunk and talking on her cell phone too.

And it was a .45! She's lucky to be alive.

Another Accidental Shooting
I'm opposed to the use of the word "Accidental" in these cases. I'm pretty sure "Negligent" is the word that best describes this type of shooting.

Thank god the kid had the gun pointed in the right direction.
While anyone getting shot is bad, stupid adults getting shot is a lot more palatable than kids. This story could have been a lot worse.
I think the earth is overdue for another giant asteroid.

So.. The only thing that will stop a bad toddler with a gun is a good toddler with a gun?

I'm wondering if this will change her rhetoric. Beyond that I'm glad she's not dead. Or at least that the kid doesn't have to grow up in the guilt of having killed mom.

She and her husband need to be charged with child neglect and endangerment, reckless endangerment and whatever else they can throw at them. If they are convicted of a felony, they lose their right to own a gun and they should.
They should also have CPS going through their house bi-annually to make sure their kids are not in danger.
I'm pro-gun, but I'm even more pro-gun safety.

Local paper reports the sheriff's department is recommending misdemeanor charges.
he Putnam County Sheriff’s Office recommends a charge of allowing a minor access to a firearm for a 31-year-old Jacksonville mother who was shot in the back March 8 by her 4-year-old son while driving her pickup truck.
The Sheriff’s Office said it will forward a complaint affidavit to the State Attorney’s Office with the second-degree misdemeanor that could be punishable with up to 180 days in jail.
snip
Investigators spoke with her March 15 in the hospital. The Department of Children and Families also is investigating the incident and is set to interview the child this week, DeLoach said.
The Department of Children and Families said Gilt’s children are in the care of family members, the investigation is continuing and no other details will be provided.
DeLoach said the State Attorney’s Office could consider child-endangerment charges. That office said the case is under review and so it will not comment.
There is a question of whether or not the SA goes for the misdemeanor charge. Putnam County is very conservative and redneck, so the SA has to consider political repercussions.

I thought being conservative means recognizing personal responsibility? Her negligence put her child in danger, so it's only natural that she pays the price.
It's less about the gun than about her being an idiot.

That's only when it comes to money. This is about guns and being able to raise your kids how you want and store your guns how you want.

Worthwhile details from the sheriff dept news conferecet:
"The investigation revealed that Jamie placed the gun, which was not in a holster, under the front seat of the truck. Sometime during her drive the gun apparently slid back to the rear floorboard, below where her four year old son was seated in a booster seat. According to family members, the child recently learned to unbuckle his seatbelt. Investigators discovered the child removed himself from the seat, presumably to grab a toy from the floorboard, saw the gun, picked it up and accidentally fired through the rear of the driver seat, striking Jamie."
She was reckless as hell.

Stupid mommy tricks...stuff the anti-gun crowd loved to focus on.
Forget that she ignored (negligence) any semblance of firearms safety.
Did she have a CCW permit?

Stupid. That's the last thing we need. I'm not talking Conservative or Liberal, just gun owners.

I assume you're asking because she had a gun in the passenger compartment of her car, in Florida car carry is legal without a permit. Seen as an extension of the home.
