Perhaps the problem is in thinking about gun policy in a vacuum. A better approach might be to start considering a range of potential strategies, especially the integration of tools that focus on root causes rather than on violence itself.
I liked the article. It does put to rest many myths. I think the author would favor root cause mitigation

Very interesting. But if 80% of crime guns have been purchased legally, that means 20% have not. On the other hand, since we have a background check system, that implies that there is a black market for firearms and that the background check system is being evaded. Interesting that drug and alcohol abuse are better predictors of violent crime than mental illness. They note that Britain and Australia have virtually banned guns, but there was just a story in the news about a multiple shooting incident near Sydney, Australia. Apparently a "business dispute" between bikers. I guess these guys didn't hear about the gun ban.
